Melindra in Hartsvale and default NPC behavior

It would be nice if NPCs dropped unexpected items by default, at least quest-specific items. I don't know if there's a particular flag that easily distinguishes quest tokens from other items--if not, I can't imagine this would be easy to implement. But it would help smooth out gameplay in the face o...

Re: Connecting to the Game

It's definitely not the client, no. One thing I've noticed: My connection rate with putty is about 50/50. When something works, the login screen appears normally. When the connection is doomed, the login screen appears without the colon at the very end.

Re: Connecting to the Game

I'm surprised to report that putty works for me even without a proxy, though it still drops/lags on occasion. It seems to do so less often when I enable TCP keepalives, but that might just be confirmation bias. I wonder what putty does differently than most mud clients and the native telnet client?

Re: Connecting to the Game

I was able to connect to the mud using PuTTY and SOCKS proxies from Brazil and the United Kingdom. For reference, I'm from California and was experiencing issues. https://www.socks-proxy.net/ has a bunch of free proxies, but you do have to take a leap of faith and trust the proxies with your credent...

Re: Connecting to the Game

If the game's administrators wouldn't mind, we could try to set up a proxy from some endpoint that has a decent connection to the server. I'm sure we could get a AWS micro or something along those lines going without too much effort. Of course, that comes with a natural risk: you're sending your use...

A lanky, chestnut-haired female human yells 'Sound the alarms! There is a duck spy pretending to be a penguin! A very suspicious duck!' You yell 'QUACK!' A lanky, chestnut-haired female human yells 'They've gotten to you, too!' You begin to chant. A small silver mirror glows briefly. Some monstrous ...

Lyndin would enjoy some reverse-piracy.

Edit: Yeah, Lyndin is no longer interested in any future ventures. OOCly, thanks for the invite!

Re: Making Wizard Specializations Unique

I do not know that we have enough spells for limited spell selection to result in your desired diversity. No matter what, everyone who is not a transmuter is going to take stoneskin, and the same goes for all of the other most commonly used buff spells. When it comes to selecting damage spells, I do...

Re: Crippling Strike

Yeah, I'm not arguing it should be busted all the way down to Short duration, but it's a bit silly that it lasts longer than resurrection sickness and cannot be healed by a spell which explicitly clears all ability damage in tabletop. I'd be fine with removing the Heal counter for the sake of balanc...

Re: Crippling Strike

Unrelated suggestion to reduce (if absolute in duration) or cap (if it stacks in duration) the length at which someone hit with Crippling Strike is crippled. For a monster, it doesn't matter, the PC is probably going to kill it in a minute or two at most. For a PC, three real-life hours of -6 streng...

Re: Making Wizard Specializations Unique

I've only played this game for about 300 hours (and 2/3 of that is meditation, wandering around, roleplaying, and otherwise not engaging with the mechanics) so don't take my perspective as a matter of any authority. Still, it appears to me that if you want to make the various wizard guilds more dist...

Re: Descriptions and Flee

An alias is not quite the cure you make it out to be, because the spell has casting time. When I tried that, Lyndin got some lorem ipsum in HIS description, and the panther description was unaltered. The only solution for setting a description for a polymorph target on the fly is going to be a trigg...

Descriptions and Flee

This suggestion is closely related to the bug I filed about attempting to move while polymorphed into a panther. When polymorphed into a panther, your description is too short. You get the error message: You aren't allowed to enter the Forgotten Kingdoms yet. You must have a description first. See h...

Re: Newbie Feedback

As Thurgan said, you are not punished for grouping. Codewise you earn more XP by grouping than solo. The first group I joined was much too large. Lyndin hardly got any hits in, so his share was near zero. Later attempts with pairs and trios went a lot better (though part of that is probably access ...

Re: Rabid Wolf Quest

Not that I disagree with any particular bit of wisdom shared here, but what makes this quest different than many other hazards easily reached by new players is that: (a) the rooms spawn mobs in ambush, so you can't look before you leap and avoid trouble. (b) the rooms spawn every time you enter, and...

Oh, okay, cool. With the way rounds are structured, I had never been attacked while casting a spell. I hadn't realized that was a thing that could happen, to be honest. Never mind, then.

Unguilded wizard cannot cast any level 2 or higher spell because they need to choose whether they want to become generalist mages or specialists, joining the appropriate guild. Once your character joins the guild of your choosing through the quest all spells will become available to them (barring, ...

Re: Newbie Feedback

One final bit of feedback before I go: why the heck can't unspecialized wizards learn and cast real second level spells? Glitterdust and Bulls Strength would make the grind a whole lot more tolerable, but most importantly, I would kill for the ability to turn invisible.
