a "remember" command

Post by tiyari » Sat Apr 04, 2015 6:15 am

Could we please have a command so that we can manually remember someone?

Please, don't flame or get upset with this request. Or at least, let's not argue about it.

I know, first of all, that we are not to push someone to greet us. It's their right not to, just as it's up to us if we want others to know us by name.

In real-life, it's true that we don't go around introducing ourselves to random people, unless there's a reason.

In the game world, the amount of adventurers is small. Yes, there are silent, invisible NPCs. But after many times of seeing someone's face, would you not recognize them? Would you not, after hearing a name and seeing a face, begin to associate the two?

I find it very tedious to always ask who a person is IC, and having to play stupid because I've heard a name and know a face, but for some strange reason I can't put the two together. I don't understand at all how this makes RP sense. It feels like having to play dumb as dumb can be when, in fact, maybe you do remember, should remember, based on how often you have met.

I'm using myself as an example here because I don't want to speak for other players.

I've been on another game with an intro system. On there, you couldn't know the person if you saw them on the street and they hadn't introed to you. Again, it felt like playing stupid.
I don't know where the line is here, so I choose a more reserved stance, acting as if I know a name and a face, but not the two as a particular person, until greeted.

It's maddening on a personal level, to have this type of system, and having to work around it.

Therefore, I would like to ask for a command: remember

It would allow something like this:

remember grey-haired as name

remember brown-haired as Tiyari

Even if it's the wrong name associated, it'd resemble what we do already--remember people in a certain way.

Keep the greet system, just add this as a means of not always seeing the adjectives and trying to remember who they match.

I want to clarify a couple things, lest anyone get up in arms about my suggestion.

I'm not whining, upset, making a big deal. I genuinely would like to see something done so that players don't have to go around playing guessing games.

I think this is a phenomenal idea. It would definitely require some coding, but I think it would be very useful. This would allow people to give an alias rather than their full name, which is something I've always thought would be really fun.

An alternative could be a Fake-greet option. Perhaps that could also coincide with a disguise.

If roguish Jimbo wants to tell people his name is Bojim, he could type
Fakegreet all Bojim

Or if he's having a quiet conversation with bob, he could type
Fakegreet bob Bojim
Benorf the Stout, Axe of Torm
Formyndare Mastare, Horn Guard of Yondalla

This has come up more times than I can count in the past, the general consensus seems to be the same every time.

Use the alias command, or notepad to help remember things.

Ex: alias brown-haired, fat Bob
Beshaba potatoes.

Bumping this thread again because we had a majorly positive reaction to the possiblity of having this feature up in the game, when discussed on discord, giving the aforementioned abilities to people that want to give fake names and not get instantly recognized as a fake name, due to being unable to greet, among other nice things that would arise.

Rakthar Of the Axe, Diplomat of the Dwarves
Pax, Hired Guard
Phyrala, Baenre Priestess

A remember command would be alright, but below ar my issues.

One of my main disagreements with a remember command in other games and here in an RP setting is how often people actually remember the names of people they don't see often.

Some of my more inane characters will literally refer to people who don't greet them as some demeaning or nonsensical nickname until they do. My point in bringing this up being that I don't think names are particularly important.

Sure, if you want to play a character with an idetic memory, notepad is probably your friend, but in large, the people who don't greet you aren't the people you will be roleplaying with hour after hour, I'd feel free to call them whatever nickname your character feels like assigning them at the time, its probably more authentic that way than trying to gather the name of everyone you meet.

In the end, I do think the game needs to begin adding some features that will smooth out the experience of roleplaying a character. Various solutions to various problems exist on the user side, but if I wanted to work rather than play, I'd spend my time doing other things than logging in.
I trained up double-edged bananas because the uber-plantain of doom I scored from the beehive quest was the best weapon in the game. Now it's being treated like a bug and they have gimped its damage! That's not fair! My character is ruined!
