Unable to List without speaking native language?

I don't know if this is new or I'm just noticing it. I'm seeing quite a few mobs able to speak to me properly in a tongue I can understand, but when I attempt to utilize the list command, I get the response "I can't understand you."

One such example is Landrin:

Code: Select all

Landrin raises an eyebrow at you.
Landrin exclaims to you 'What are you doing here? This is my room!'
Landrin asks you 'Or you have come to buy some <edited out>?'

<99%hp 0m 97%mv> list
Landrin says to you 'I can't understand you.'

<99%hp 0m 97%mv> speak dwarven
You now speak dwarven.

<99%hp 0m 97%mv> list
Landrin says to you 'I can't understand you.'

You say 'Boot ye speak Common wull..'
I speak 2 languages and am GM at both: Common and Dwarven. Attempting to use List with either produces the same response.

(16270) Landrin the gnome wizard rests here.
speaks only...wait for it...gnome!

Maybe the bug is that you can speak with him at all...(as for TRAIN)

I'll let the area folks decide if he should be more worldly, but I don't see a compelling reason he should.

Torand may have been under the influence of some affect that allows him to understand other languages?

This mobile speaks gnome and understands gnome. I tested him with a character that understood only common and he responded as you would expect.
Landrin exclaims to you 'Vhzt arf yos eoknh jerf? Tijs is ma room!'
Landrin asks you 'Or yos gaxf cnme ro buy uqme pire yne rqbcceo?'
list
Landrin says to you 'I czo'r wnedtstanf yov.'
So I taught [my character] dwarven too...
Landrin raises an eyebrow at you.
Landrin speaks in a language that you do not recognize...
Landrin exclaims to you 'Wjat arc ypu bpiog hdre? Tfis is mx topm!'
Landrin asks you 'Or apu jaue booe ro buy tome nkog and uocaccn?'
list
Landrin speaks in a language that you do not recognize...
Landrin says to you 'G can's vocerstbld xou.'

I meant when I typed list, he spoke some language I could actually understand, but when I tried to talk to him in either languages I know, he wouldn't respond to either. :D

I can't reproduce this. If I don't speak gnome, he won't LIST for me and everything he says is garbled, as it should be. However, he will still TRAIN me, which is a bug, I think. Will bug that once confirmed.

I always assumed that was intentional. It's been that way for as long as I've been here.

It should be intentional. For instance, if you don't know how to speak Gnome, how could you possibly learn from a Gnome if they only speak Gnome?

The coders agree with Selveem on this one - the original babel training may have been intentional, but it is considered a bug by the code team, just too much of an IC reach. Put in as bug 998.

This is now fixed on the testport, and should be fixed soon on the main port as well, if not already.

Thanks for the assistance, everyone.

If there is still an outstanding issue with language around TRAIN, LIST, or BUY, please report it here.
