Hi friends: The top MUDs on TMC are typically games that might as well be World of Warcraft without pictures. They often do not have a standard setting or theme; they do not enforce role-play; and they therefore can sometimes have a chatroom with swords. I am generalizing widely and unfairly, but the point of this is not to denigrate them; it is to stress that our role-play is an important part of our game and it makes us different.
I want to be clear that I am writing for myself, with the perspective of a staff member, but not speaking for the staff as a group. This is just something that I want to stress personally.
Role-play is an important part of our game, but it is not something that the staff likes to inflict upon people with thunder, lightning, and appearances by Cyric. Role-play is best enforced by players sticking to their roles and thereby encouraging one another. If one player walks into a room and two others are busily role-playing, the chances of that player going along are great. Many people here are not familiar with role-playing games before they join us and many people know nothing about the Forgotten Realms (I didn't really know Tethyr from Cormyr when I started playing this game), but they will be encouraged by your example and your patient help. You helping them to learn how to role-play is helping yourself and everyone else to enjoy the game.
If someone really does not want to role-play and you don't feel comfortable saying something politely OOC then feel free to use ASK for help and a staff member will try to speak to the player about it and explain.
My two cents. Thanks for reading!

I've played several MUDs, and I will say that most of them are inferior to FK. Armageddon, however, deserves a spot in the top five because it is strictly roleplayed and uniquely devised - You may not live long there, but your death (if it happens) will almost certainly be IC.
Aside from Armageddon, I see no MUD that is on the level of FK.
I would suggest that the goal of FK is to get new roleplayers, not new players. Every MUD has players. Without roleplayers, it becomes meaningless.

Re: Role-Play
Without any players, the mud does not thrive and exist. Some people have had FK as their first mud ever that introduced them to RP, and they stay for the RP. New players can turn into roleplayers if given the nudge and general direction as to how, as Harroghty suggests:Jeanne wrote:I would suggest that the goal of FK is to get new roleplayers, not new players. As much interest as we can garner, when they find they can't really do anything without RPing to some extent...they either take it, or leave it. If they take it, we can help along the way so it becomes easier to do, and in that, our numbers grow and we benefit with new ideas and new people.Harroghty wrote:Many people here are not familiar with role-playing games before they join us and many people know nothing about the Forgotten Realms (I didn't really know Tethyr from Cormyr when I started playing this game), but they will be encouraged by your example and your patient help. I came personally as a roleplayer, but knew absolutely nothing about Forgotten Realms. But I stayed because I enjoyed the atmosphere, and had awesome help in learning with my interactions.
