Grand Masters and Their Work.

Post by Nysan » Sun Jul 11, 2004 8:58 pm

Some time ago, we discussed GM'ed weaponsmiths and armorsmiths being able to mark their work with a special seal or marking to show that they made it. Far as I know, this idea has been placed on the TODO list and for the moment left as is. While I sit here; mining, smelting, reading, ect. I had a similar thought. GM'ed Smelters marking their worked metal. Seen gold and silver bars irl marked with the symbols of countries and mines they came from. Figured it would not be too bad an idea to one day, likely in the far far future, seeing "a piece of mithril marked with two crossing hammers" or "a piece of steel marked with an oak leaf". Thoughts?

You do not need to change the world, merely leave it a little better than how you found it.

I think it would be more realistic if it was marked with the mark of your hometown, because stamped gold and the like in olden times was marked with the mark of their liege or country instead of the actual smelter themselves I beleive. This might also put in some good RP as metal from mithril hall would be more valuable than such from waterdeep, or people might not use metal from zhentil keep or some such.

Close enough to what I was thinking to agree with it. Regional/town markings on smelted metals made by GM'ed smelters.

Yes, we know it is in for like smithing and making trades, but is it in for smelting, Mystra?

A Thought on GM Smiths

Post by Nysan » Sun Jul 18, 2004 9:13 am

Having some time to kill while mining, I did a search over past forums as well as my small collection of FR materials and an interesting idea stuck me. Currently in FK is the option for wizards at the top of their profession to undergo quests for researching spells to call their own, lovely idea that works well. This, along with a remembering something from a book I read, sparked my idea about GM weapon and armor smiths. A quest for GM'ed smiths to undergo to allow them to create one unique, magically-enchanted weapon or piece of armor once they attain GM. One item per GM trade per character of course. Similar to the way Bruenor did when he created his finest work, the war hammer he gave his 'son' way back when. This idea could also be used in the other crafting trades as well, though I cannot see how it would work for a trade like appraise or mining. Thoughts, comments, complaints?

I think it is a great idea. Each master having his or her own masterpiece.
I am ready to meet my Maker. Whether my Maker is prepared for the great ordeal of meeting me is another matter.

This is a wonderful idea. It would allow for added RP and potential uniqueness to some characters. I believe it is deserving for those who spent much of their time mastering their work.
