Expanding Mining Knowledge....

Post by Nysan » Sun Jul 11, 2004 9:16 am

Rather than start several threads about the same trade, I'll toss all these together and hope for the best. These questions came up during a conversation with a player new to dwarves and mining and since they are not covered in the helps files here they are...

1. Does the type/quality of the pick used effect mining?

2. Does armor hinder mining effectiveness?

3. Similar to making arrowheads and daggers cannot make a GM WS, can mining only the first metals make you a GM miner?

Had my dwarf swinging his pick for some time now and I really couldn't answer these questions with certainty. Can anyone else?

1. Does the type/quality of the pick used effect mining?
Generally, the quality of your tools has more to do with them not getting damaged by repeated use than with their aid to mining/smelting etc.

A pick or hammer would probably have to be created with a specific bonus attributed to it for it to benefit trades
2. Does armor hinder mining effectiveness?
Armour hindrance shows up in the form of echoes whenever you fail at a particular task. With Dwarven trades I am assuming that their is no hindrance since there are no echoes. I can not be 100% certain on this one, but logically....dwarves are more likely to wear their armour when they are working than most craftsmen

That said, wearing too much armour will effect other abilties which go towards keeping you mining. I'm thinking mainly of meditation and prayer casting as a priest here.
3. Similar to making arrowheads and daggers cannot make a GM WS, can mining only the first metals make you a GM miner?
Making arrowheads and daggers will make you a Grandmaster weaponsmith eventually I believe...it will just take considerably longer.
Whether or not this same factor has been applied to mining and smelting I could not say.

In my own experience, I have quite happily progressed my dwarven character to high levels of expertise without aiming to mine or smelt only the highest ore type that I can find.

It might be an idea to approach more experienced miners ICly and have them prospect some decent ore types for you to test your theories on... as opposed to running around each reboot looking for the best ore type and merely setting the whole place to tin or something equally unimpressive :D

Hope this all helps
Remember, should you encounter an angry Dragon and your only company is a Halfling...
...you do not need to run faster than the Dragon, only the halfling.

It's a wolverine, not a skunk... sheesh

New question, same trade.
Undermountain's rp policy is you forget when you leave. Does this effect mining as well, or would it be ok to consider it along the same lines as quest information?

Mystra wrote:The recent code update made it that you cannot GM a trade making just arrowheads and daggers. It made no IC sense that someone could be considered a GM at making weapons and all they could do was make arrowheads?????

Sharni
Alright, maybe not, but ide bet they could make some damn good arrowheads.
Glim asks Gwain 'Can I be on the watch?!?'
Gwain raises an eyebrow.
Gwain seems to display a look of complete horror for a second...
