Pretty simple, I would suggest that the character creation tool should throw a warning if the combination of selections you made for race and starting location will result in not speaking common at start.

I think a combination of common sense and a little research is enough to get an idea whether you'll be speaking Common (e.g, most anything save humans from the Underdark; orcs, halforcs, and goblins from the Orc Camp; and so on). There are also always the ask channel and these fora if one is uncertain and in need of some quick help. :D

There's a portion of character creation when you choose your main race that says:
You now speak elven/dwarven/orc/whatever.
Maybe an additional line to say, type language/lang to check your languages here would resolve everything.

I don't think the help files or the wiki say if wild elf is able to speak common at the moment do they? And so on.

I'm always a fan of efficient problem solving and removing the need to ever use the ask channel is mostly why I suggest this.
I trained up double-edged bananas because the uber-plantain of doom I scored from the beehive quest was the best weapon in the game. Now it's being treated like a bug and they have gimped its damage! That's not fair! My character is ruined!

I may be old fashion here...but I feel about 5 minutes of research in a player handbook can resolve just about any questions that anyone might have about creating a character.

Far as I know, there's a bunch of people who aren't familiar with dnd... I mean, I played the game and still didn't know much about gold, or wild elves. I'll be honest, I've never seen the PHB for 3.5 in my life. I played 3.5 using the SRd for 1 and a half games and moved on.

If the game requires player's know something, I think it would be more productive for it to be in help files or a game resource should probably link to it.

E.g. The deity help files are pretty good in this aspect.
