New Skill - Head-butt

Post by Velsavius » Sat Sep 18, 2004 8:00 am

I haven't got a Fighter character, so I am not sure if this already exists (but saying that I've never seen it when in a party either) but I was thinking if at least the fighter could when Fighting unarmed recieve the Head-butt skill, perhaps when they are a higher level or the skill of the weapon they are using is greater they could then incorporate it with their weapon, I know its similar to the kick skill, but it could add a little somethining to the combat and make it a little more different/Interesting/Varied, and who's ever read of a Dwarf not knowing how to head-butt?

Thinking further on the Head-butt, maybe it could be incorporated into being used after a 'TRIP' ......As <enemy> gets up from the ground <PC> stuns them with a head-butt.

Yeah, it doesn't really make as much sense as kick and punch do when fighting with a weapon. Maybe if they ever actually make a Monk class or guild, then this would work. But, I don't know about a fighter getting the skill.

Like Velsavius said, who ever heard of a Dwarf not knowing how to head-butt? Maybe it should be a Dwarf skill.

Oh yeah, and as far as making it incorporated with trip. The only class that I could see getting the trip skill would be thieves, and they don't really use over=powering techniques like a head-butt. They use quick and sometimes dirty tactics to win fights. Head-butt just seems a bit over=powering to be considered for them.

If a dwarf had it the only question would be can he jump to head-butt a PC or a mob? But if he was fighting other dwarves I would understand this comes into the height issue

You see...that's where the horned helms come in handy...but I don't know how that part could be implemented into the game. That would be hard...unless you get it to where a horned helm is like a weapon. ^-^;; Just throwing ideas out here...heh.

I think the head-butt skill would be very practical. I've read my share of FR novels, and a head-butt comes into play more often than not. In a fight between fighters it can still come in handy, even if they both wield long swords. Drizzt used it in the fight against Artemis Entreri in "The Silent Blade". Point being, even an experienced warrior such as Drizzt could use this simple tactic.

Ok this leads to the next question...If he/she is wearing a helmet or visor would you want to headbutt? even if you have a helm on if his has a better AC than yours it should get damaged or you get hurt in the attempt to headbutt him

I agree with some, disagree with others, but for the most part, you guy are thinking way to literal. It's a fantasy game, something we play to "get way from it all". Yeah, in real life it would hurt very much to headbutt a nice hard helm, but in a game, not so much. Think on the other side of the spectrum. It'd be kinda cool to have a new skill, and add a little something different to the mix. Now don't think I'm criticizing FK, because I'm not, I'm critiquing. I love this game, it was the game that interoduced me to MUDs and the greatest MUD I've been able to find. I guess my main point is stop thinking about things in real life and start thinking about how it will benefit the game.
And if anyone disagrees with me I swear by Oghma's wisdom and by Tempus' might, I will smite you all  Just joking, feel free to disagree.

You could always just rp head-butting if you really wanted to do it, just smote it and then use the bash skill, it can be just as interesting. Or you could just smote the skill and leave it at that. The thing is that such skills always seemed more verbal than battle skills to me. I would think an angry dwarf would be just socializing by ramming me with his head at point blank range. Or it can be simply smoted in the heat of battle.

Of course that's only my opinion, I tend to smote alot of everyday actions as best and icly as possible and it works for me.

I agree with Gwain here. The only time a headbutt would really be of any use beyond a punch/kick would be in a fight against another player character... I'm extremely quirky when it comes to player-character combat in that I hate using code, so if I wanted to use a headbutt, I would do so through a smote and act into it... Maybe I'm thinking into this too much, but I don't think a head-butt skill would really change an awful lot.
If you were using a code fight, it would all happen so quickly that you'd barely appreciate it :P

As mentioned by several others, it would be far too open to a breach of true roleplay in regards to head-butting someone wearing a helm. Fantasy or not, the roleplay is still important, especially on this MUD.
It would bug me almost as much as when people insist on using gouge againse someone wearing a visor... Unless that's been changed recently?

Just want to go on record and vote nae for headbutt. No real use for it, although for dwaves might be ok.

And I would like to go on record as saying that this is a decent idea. But, I would rather see the new character creation system, and new coded areas put into the game before a skill like this. You have punch, kick, and bash. RP out the head-butting. Oh well, that is just my opinion.
