[Spells] Touch Spell Crits

Post by Tarven » Tue Sep 11, 2012 7:43 am

Little known gem of SRD 3.5, spells with a target of 'touch' or 'ranged touch' not only require a d20 roll to hit, but can critically hit on a natural roll of 20 with a standard crit confirmation. This doesn't include a lot of spells, and 5% isn't a huge chance, but, everyone loves crits! They're shiny.

No truer words have been spoken/typed.

Well, maybe. But these are pretty spot on. Crits are shiny and delicious and full of yay.

Until you get smacked by a mob's critical spell. >.>

In any case, if this isn't in the game yet, I think it should be on the agenda for some testing to bring in. I think it'd be very nice for healing spells in particular, too.

Being as healing spells don't require attack rolls (Except against undead, which can't receive critical hits), I don't believe they would be subject to critical success, and I can find nothing in SRD to suggest otherwise.

As to mobiles getting critical spell success, better hope that you disrupt their spells. I personally would like to see mobile casters be a bit scarier. It would encourage group play.

Ah, yeah, you're right. Looks like the roll was required during our last game because the recipient was unwilling. I don't recall whether the cleric rolled an attack roll to touch him or not, but there was an opposing roll for a save.

I've also been taking this for granted, but what do touch spell attack bonuses go off on FK, just BAB? Or are the appropriate str for melee touch and dex for ranged touch taken into account by the code as well?
I trained up double-edged bananas because the uber-plantain of doom I scored from the beehive quest was the best weapon in the game. Now it's being treated like a bug and they have gimped its damage! That's not fair! My character is ruined!

I can't say with certainty, obviously, but I can say with a high degree of confidence that they work as they should. I have observed that without certain spells active, my touch and ranged touch spells are much more difficult to aim correctly.
