Hide and Sneak

Post by Balek » Fri Nov 05, 2004 5:44 am

I was wondering if it was possible to give all drow the ability to hide and sneak as a racial skill. These are essential skills for surviving in the Underdark. If a drow does not know how to hide and sneak, he or she would almost certainly be killed outside of the city, since the noise they make would attract more monsters than they could deal with. The ability to slip past a monster unnoticed is absolutely critical.

Furthermore, it could be argued that most would learn to sneak simply for the benefit it would provide inside the city itself. With intrigue and murder as common as they are, one can hardly imagine that a drow would last very long if he or she could not get somewhere unnoticed every now and then.

I noted this the other day and sent a question about it.

Drow do not have the ability of hide/sneak, but the feat 'stealthy,' which is availible to those from Menzo according to the helpfile, improves one's hide/sneak. I asked if Drow would gain the ability through this feat. No one happened to know of a correct answer so perhaps we could ask here.

I would think not all drow would know how to hide and sneak with any skill. Why would a priestess bother to learn this, when every male should be cowering before her and drow do not fear Ibliths (non drow). And wizards spend too much time learning spells to bother.

It should either be an option for warrior/fighters or rogue/thief should be an available class perhaps?

All drow are stealthy by nature, whole armies of drow can move through without making a sound. It is a survival skill in the underdark and every class learns them in participating on the patrols that are sent out from the academy.

I beleive a long time ago Mystra said she was putting a quest so all drow could learn these skills into the TODO...wether its still there or not I dunno.

You could help speed the process by offering to submit one perhaps?

Gwain raises an eyebrow.

For the patrols, stealth is a must. However, for the armies moving silently, isn't that really because of their magic items, boots specifically? When I pictured them marching to war, I can believe no sound, but I can't see them actually trying to sneak, you know?

You can walk without making a sound and not be 'sneaking'

All drow learn the arts of moving silently and hiding in the terrain as part of their training at the Acadamy. Its not for fear of their humanoid foes, like the dwarven, gnome, or human residents of the Underdark and other places. It is for respect (fear) of some of the NON-humanoid residents. Drow will not admit they have fear, but they have admitted respect for the abilities of some of the Underdark residents; deep dragons, mind frayers, ect, ect. Plus, Drow get a kick out of surprising their humanoid opponents by being able to track, surround, and ambush them without the humanoid foes knowing they were there.

So, yes almost all Drow study the arts of moving silently and hiding. To them it is basic suvival skills they learn much like learning the echo riddle or handling a weapon. Be it out of respect (fear) for some Underdark opponents or the look on a humanoid opponent's face when they get ambushed. *shrug*

Plus I think I have read somewhere that all drow minus females spend some time in melee magthere learning the basics to survival. Those who are to be scouts and fighters basically the army grunts stay far longer. If they are proven to have natural talent for magic they are sent off to Sorcere. Some females decide to join melee magthere and become superior warriors as well^^ The female drow I thought had prayers and such to teach them to move silently. Although at times they like to make screaching sounds at there grunts who..ignore what they can! >.> hah! Warriors and forward scouts definately learn to sneak and hide. If not most of the inhabitants in the underdark don't see with there eyes as much as they do with there hearing like bats ^^
I take only what I need and I need everything!
