Invis
Invis
Could the 'listen' skill be incorporated into invis? Where invis could act like sneak and listen and on a successful roll the person can see 'someone walks in from the north' etc. I just can't see a average person without the listen skill, seeing 'someone walks in from the north' all the time someone invis enters the square that they are in.
Well, I still think it works fine. No one knows who you are when you come in. Unless they cast detect invisible or hidden I can't remember which one it is, then they won't see you. As opposed to sneak where they can still see you, but you don't make any sound when coming in.

Allow me to expand on what I said earlier about this. I've always looked at it like this. There is Invisibility and true invisibility. Now, true invisibility means noone can see you at all. But, I always looked at invisibility as having the predator effect. There's a slight distortion around you from the weave being manipulated. That's just the way I see it. Don't know which invis is. True or not

Though I think this would more properly be in the Spells forum, I'll expound on my opinions (Yes, as usual)
Invisibility isn't the Predator effect. There's no shimmer, or ripple. You are immediately and totally undetectable, by sight, unless a spell renders you able to see the invisible.
Now, as was mentioned earlier, yes, if you do not have sneak, you can be in fact heard. In the Players handbook it specifically mentions this, so I think it's well done that if they don't have sneak, you can still hear even if you can't see.
Now, my point on it is that most Wizards have not spent the time, nor have the inclination to try and remain stealthy, that's why many do not have the sneak ability, nor could they learn it.
That's why wizards hire thieves, and cast spells of invisiblity on them, so that they can handle the sneaky and quiet.
This is also a likely reason the Silence spell was invented, as well as it's obvious effect that can be combat oriented, and in fact the creation of the Silent Spell metamagic feat.

Regardless, I agree with Telk. In Tabletop DnD it wouldn't be an automatic success to hear someone who is invisible coming into the area, especially if you're walking in a large outdoor wilderness area or along the road. Although the listen check shouldn't be as difficult as someone with a high skill in sneak, I agree that there should at least be a chance that the person is not heard. More applications for the Listen skill, too.
