Dilution of Character?

Post by Lerytha » Wed Dec 29, 2004 8:31 pm

Well, I have two moments free time, and I was wondering if anyone else has the following problem:

You have a great idea for an obnoxious character that no-one will like, but you get to Waterdeep (hometown as applicable), and you find that because you have to be nasty, it is difficult to progress without "diluting" the character.

This is a thread to find out

a) If it happens to anyone else

b) What you can do to prevent dilution

Sometimes, I am forced to back-peddle quite rapidly with a character, just so I can have a little help. Would that be wrong from a RP point of view, back-pedalling just so you can get help at the beginning?

I'd be interested in any view! Thanks!

There are some people in our world who are simply unpleasant people, and often these people don't get a lot of help and sympathy from those around them. There are some people who are able to suppress whatever anger and hostility they have enough that they can get along with someone long enough to collaborate on a cooperative effort.

Basically, you have to decide if your character is just angry all the time (thus getting very little help), or if they're cunning enough to hide their feelings long enought o convince someone to work with them. If you really need to, it's possible to do a lot of things by yourself, even if they're much more difficult that way. It's the price you pay for playing an antisocial character.

I've got characters that, for one reason or another, are either disliked or simply don't enjoy talking to people, and often I end up either working on these characters without any help, or finding a select few people who they can put up with long enough to get something done.

Hey, when in doubt, find someone with the infinite patience of Ilmater. (insert shameless plug here :P ) There are some characters, in fact a good amount I'd say, who pride themselves on being tolerant and helpful. Because, after all, there's a difference between obnoxious and evil. A boisterous, jittery, sharp-tongued rogue could very well have a heart of gold. And that's what really matters, right? ;) So I'd say try to find some of these people, they'll be glad to help.

People liking your characters and getting along with them...what? where? Can't remember the last time Nysan was welcomed with open arms (that didn't have a blade at the end) hehe. Its a difficult rp to be alone alot, but a challenge is always entertaining. Like Balek said, you can find a few like minded characters if you truely desire company from time to time but if you want to play the meanie, the killer, or even just the occassional annoying priest, expect to be chatting with your mount or recently animated corpse of your newest kill more than your fellow players. Being such a character in Waterdeep and retaining your 'true self' is difficult. Its not really a matter of diluting your character, but being a bit more subtle in your actions and pick your victims well. Even in Waterdeep, you can be a little like yourself and still keep up the newbie shielding rp policy. It just takes some thought and imagination. Enjoy,
