Hide behind

Post by Argentia » Wed Jan 12, 2005 7:42 pm

This idea came to me after reading a post about a new spell idea... Perhaps there could be a skill, similiar to rescue, but for physically weaker classes like wizards and rogues: the hide behind skill. It would be the opposite of the rescue skill, instead of the user getting in front of the target, the user gets behind the target, and if successful, the target will take the damage for the user.
I propose this because I can see a few situations where this could be applied: a cowardly rogue hides behind a fighter, or a wizard uses his/her *ahem* undead buddies as a shield.
This skill should appropriately only be able to be used on people in your group, otherwise it could be used to dump an unwanted battle on a bypasser.

Questions, comments, concerns? :D

You might want an experience loss to go along with this, maybe subtracting the total experience gained before the pc hides behind someone else in the party sort of like cowardice.

That's a good idea Gwain. You could make it act sort of like the flee command works. Every time you use it you could lose some experience.

Ooo, that is a good idea. =) Quite the opposite of rescue in that sense. Also, I imagine favour wise some Deities would not care for it, IE maybe Ilmater, Tyr, ect the good God(esse)s. And especially Tempus.

I think, in the same context of the person USING the command losing experience, the person being used as the "meatshield" (almost sounds like it would be a direct definition for meatshield, eh? ;)) would GAIN experience as a reward for being a good sport . . . possibly the person using the skill could incur a favour loss (or a favour gain), depending on the deity. For example, Sunites hiding behind someone else would give favour, as Sune's ethos is to "love none more than yourself, save for Sune", whereas if a follower of Torm were to hide behind someone, they would incur a favour loss . . . etc. ;) Just my thoughts!

I think it would be a good thing for halflings... but I think it would also mean that goblins should be able to do it, too...or maybe Kobolds, or both.
