Counterspell

Post by Llanthyr » Fri Dec 26, 2003 6:53 am

What and how does it work? It never seems to work for me. Is there any prerequisites?

Counterspell

Post by Ursan » Fri Dec 26, 2003 3:14 pm

Syntax: counterspell <target> <spell name>

You can counter another character or NPC's spell with one of your own. Your spell must be memorised. It must be the same spell as that being cast by your opponent or the dispel magic spell.

For instance if a character is casting fireball at you, and with the spellcraft
skill you have determined this is what is being cast at you, you can use the
counterspell ability to cast fireball, and your fireball will negate their
fireball and neither spell will take effect.

This is the help file from the game. I dont have much experience with counterspell myself, but if it isnt working as you believe it should - perhaps you need to pass the details on to an Imm to check it out
Remember, should you encounter an angry Dragon and your only company is a Halfling...
...you do not need to run faster than the Dragon, only the halfling.

It's a wolverine, not a skunk... sheesh

Hmn, sorry to drag up this post, but I also cannot seem to get any form of counterspelling to work with my wizard char...

is there any update on whether this skill actually works and how you go about it, as I am sure I have been doing as the help files says...

Currently i`m thinking that it is a matter of timing... but any imput would be welcomed..

Thanks in advance..

I think it would be difficult to actaully get that typed out quickly enough, even with a hotkey, to counter most spells. Does anyone have advice on this?

I belive you use it just like any other spell. Read the help file as Ursan has posted...You must memorize the spell..then cast it on the target. Hope that was kind of what you were looking for.

That is what Llanthyr and I have been doing, without any success..

Following the syntax that's stated in the help files, you'll only get an echo 'Huh?'

I wonder if anyone ever pulled off a successful counterspell? Except NPCs, of course.

I've been counterspelled by NPC's more than a dozen times...but, never have I ever effectively counterspelled, and i tried on some helmed horrors...didn't work, imagine the shock I received...owch...
And they ran through the bush
And they ran through the bramble
And they ran through the briars where the rabbit wouldn't go
They ran so fast the hounds couldn't catch 'em
And I stumbled on my beard and I had to let 'em go.

From what I've gathered, counterspell has been disabled for a long time.
Back when it was put in the system, there was an automatic counterspell feature. I can remember using this to successfully counter a spell. Now it no longer works.

Hmn, that would be why I can`t get it working then...

Thanks :)

Counterspelling works fine on my priest character. Can't say I've tried it on a wizard - as far as I can see it's not much use, since you should be spending your time casting anyway (of course this assumes you are solo :) )

Timing is a big factor. You must type the spell in before the opposing character can finish theirs. Spellcraft is essential for this.

However, for the dexterically challanged, there is a way to overcome adversity (if I spelled that all right....).

Syntax:
auto counterspell
auto on

This should automatically counter whatever spell the opponent is casting. However, you must either A) Have the same spell or B) Have dispel magic in order for it to work. Also, you cannot be currently casting a spell. Meaning, you must either cast defensivly, or offensively.

Alright, I've tried it on auto and it works.

Instead of the usual on/off, auto mode now shows as 'Counterspell'

I do have questions: Is counterspell supposed to remove the spell that is memorised and used to counter it, and the mana required to cast that spell?

I also would like to ask, how do you go about doing a counterspell manually without using the auto function? What 'help counterspell' gives does not work. Is there another syntax that can be used?
