Detect Ailments
Detect Ailments
A simple spell for priests and perhaps rangers or paladins, detect ailments would allow for the caster to detect any sort of ailment on any other characters in the room. Such ailments that could be detected could include poison, curse, blindness, a poor mental state, etc.

Well, I had intended for this spell to be only casted on oneself, which allowed you to see what ailments where on others. Perhaps instead of 'detect magic' at higher levels it could be used for 'detect poison' at higher levels?

My intention was for this to only show negative ailments so priests could heal them. But I really do like the idea for a spell that allows wizards to detect what affects are on a character. I think it would go like this:
Cast 'detect affects' bob
Bob is affected by bulls strength, slink, and fly.
I think it would be a higher level spell, however. We are getting off topic though, but a new topic should be made with this new spell.

I like the ailments thing, Athon, I was just thinking, why stop there? Why limit a spell to just ailments when it could do just as well, if not better by detecting all the affects? It could be used for your healing purposes, but wouldnt stop at just that.
I just thought detect magic or a spell like that would work best because pretty much all casters get the spell early on.

That being from the WotC site, I think it is fairly valid, the main point being that detect magic can locate spells (though it doesn't say anything about being able to name those if the effects are not visible). Perhaps such a spell could at least detect the number of spells affecting a character, then?A detect magic spell can determine the location of the target spell's magical aura, and you reasonably can assume that locating the spell's aura with detect magic is sufficient to target the spell with dispel magic...When you aim a targeted dispel magic spell at a particular spell, only that spell is subject to dispelling. This can be very helpful when you wish to free an ally of one detrimental spell without dispelling any beneficial spells the character has received.
On several wizards that I have seen, only 1/3 at the most are visible (but then again wizards have alot of spells that they can cast on themselves that aren't visible, such as all the detect spells), and none of the stat+ spells or resist+ spells are visible...that's probably about ten or more spells, compared to, say, dragonskin, shield, stone skin, fly and maybe one or two more visible things that could be on a non-wizard.
