Journals and spellbooks that can be written in. :D

Post by Levine » Sun Dec 18, 2005 3:52 am

I was thinking.. I've seen spellbooks and journals in the game (hope its not too IC), and I've always wanted to be able to -really- write in them, just so it can really help me to remember what I did exactly (my memory fails me nearly half the time). Also, this can come in handy when you're in the middle of a quest, and you've forgotten which part exactly you've stopped at..

But then again, I haven't seen anyone with as many problems as me, and without coding, this can be easily solved by simply using word documents in our computer itself.

Also, I'm not sure if pieces of parchment should be able to be torn from these journals or spellbooks, but I've seen that happen before in-game, but the reason why the parchment was torn from the book was rather different.

I don't know how easy this would be to code, but thought it would be a good idea to. :D

Comments?

What I like to do is RP writing in my spellbook, but then keep an OOC text file on my comp of what I would have written. That way it's always there for me to recall where I was or what I was thinking. And I can access it with a double click and a quick smote. =)

Another thing you could also do is have a sheaf of papers with your notes on it, which would be the normal pieces of paper that you would normally post with, you could I guess have a seperate scroll case that is only used for this ream/sheaf/whatever of papers.
chances are you've already thought of this and yes it's not exactly what you were asking but it is an option
And as jeff would say that's just my opinion :)

The only problem with having a bunch of parchment in a scroll case is that the game doesn't differentiate between pieces of parchment; therefore, if you had 10 pages of journal, you'd have to go through all ten with a bit of inventory juggling to find things that you had written down. If the parchments could be headed differently, as notes on the in game noteboards are, (e.g. Day 1, getting eaten by a dragon; Day 2, stomach musings), then perhaps that would work, but then you'd have a long list of parchments if your journal took on any lengthy proportions.

Or how about a new item, a journal added to the game.

Each page of parchment you add to the journal allows X number of additional characters the player could add.

Oh, I noticed that 'a piece of parchment' changes into 'a note from <poster's name> to <postee's name>' when posted and removed. I was thinking, it would be good to be able to see the subject of the parchment in the item name. Like Hviti said, it would be a little messy to go through every single piece of parchment.

So here's how it may go..

Once you create a subject for the piece of parchment, 'a piece of parchment' will automatically become 'a piece of parchment headed "The Lost Treasure" ' or whatever the subject is.

I think this is a really good idea. It could be a journal that could even be sold when it gets full for publication of adventures and such. I can see some really fun RP coming of of this.

I really love the idea. So here goes for my suggestions: You can buy a stock journal that is empty. You get the item a piece of parchment and can add that to the journal by typing 'add parchment journal.' The pages would be numerical from when added and would work like the note board in game where it is numbered. So if I were to add a piece of parchment with the subject/title of 'Today I got eaten by a dwarf' as the very first thing in the journal it would add 1) Today I got eaten by a dwarf and you would just have to type 1 to flip to that page. Adding parchments would also not make them count against the parchment count in game so if someone has a huge journal and is logged on then other people can buy parchment still. To remove a piece of parchment from the journal you would just type 'Tear (number of parchment)'

For the writing part there would be two ways to go about it: one that I think would be harder to code that would allow you to set the subject/title and actually write on the parchment while it is in the journal. The second way would be just to not be able to write on the parchment or set the subject/title line while it is in the journal and have you only able to do that while the parchment is in your inventory (Just writing exactly like you would now and then add it to your journal) however, this would cause more spam and may interrupt RP.
"Hold a second, I must remember turnips for my wife"
Husband tears a piece of parchment from journal
Husband scribbles something down
Husband adds a piece of parchment to the journal
The tearing then adding would of course have to be ignored and just RPed as they are writing into the journal but it would still be the same codewise. That really isn't a lot of work though and IMO would be easier to code.

In essence all that this is would be a container of your parchments in the form of a journal IC that would have the quirks to view your parchments. The 'get' and 'put' commands would be substituted with the tear and add commands. A modified container.

There can also be different sizes and colors that hold different amounts which could be bought quite a few places: temples, the scroll shops (which could also carry other writing supplies.), wandering merchants, guilds, book shops... the list goes on.

I would really love to see this added to the game.

I think having a journal in the game would be an awesome idea, or being able to distinguish between parchments would be great too!

My character Ihnen is a gnome Chronicler...it would make his job A LOT easier :D
