Missing trainers

Post by Dalvyn » Thu Feb 02, 2006 5:53 pm

We hope to be able to modify areas again soonish. Currently, those who have access to the files do not have the time to deal with area updates, but a new code for semi-automated area updates should be built soon.

To get ready for that, I'd like to have some input about skills, spells, and feats that are in need of trainers.

I would need information not only about skills/spells/feats with no trainers but also about skills/spells/feats who have restricted trainers. For example, there might be a trainer for a spell that can only be reached by evil characters; or a Cyricist might be the only available trainer for a spell (which makes it ICly unavailable to Mystrans and most good-aligned characters). Or the only trainer for a feat might be a mob who only trains members of his guild. That is this kind of information that I am looking for.

If you are willing to help, do NOT post this kind of information on the forum, but rather send it directly to builders@forgottenkingdoms.com.

Thanks!

By the way, I am not going to answer individually to all those who are going to send information, so I'll just say/write "Thanks" once and for all here!

When you say that you hope to be able to modify areas again soon, does that include putting in new areas as well and working on the building queue, or simply adjusting old areas to include new things? Just for my personal records and to know whether I should ramp up area production to get it in during a window or something.

Work has already started on a system to update areas to the test port as well. Builders will be contacted as soon as the system is ready, obviously.

So the answer to your question is both.

I don't mean to be contrarian but getting something updated on the test port is very different from getting it approved to be in game due to the process it needs to go through. Is there any talk about altering or expediting the review process or anything like that which would suggest a possibility of new areas being introduced into the game sometime soon?

Well, a system to get the files to the testport may not expedite the review process directly. What it will do is allow easy modification of existing areas, and also allow for quicker posting of revisions to areas under construction. that alone would have sped up the development of Tangled Trees from its current state. I think what Dal is saying is that he's geared up to start tackling the existing bugs that have been waiting to be updated for so long.

There are several things that should be done in the following weeks/months:

- existing areas should be updated to fix some "urgent" bugs (as in: show-stoppers - I'm thinking for example about making the dwarven fighter guild accept dwarves -) or to try and add some code that will prevent abuse (as in: reopen areas that have been closed because of abuse);

- existing areas should be updated to support code changes (as in: quests, especially newbie and guild quests must be updated so they correspond with the current code - I'm thinking about adding lessons about memorization to the School of Wonder for example, or updating the ranger quest so that it is not based on skills that rangers no longer get or ignore skills that they get);

- existing areas should be updated to solve less important problems (as in: fixing typoes that players have reported, adding improvements, adding trainers, adding trade quests, adding new things like permanent gates - like in official Forgotten Realms -, develop herbalism for nature-oriented characters, ...);

- areas that are being built should be updated to the test port so the building may continue (that will hopefully help to get builders motivated again and I hope we can convince all the builders to regain interest in their areas and not to just abandon their projects);

- areas in the review queues should be reviewed and eventually updated to the game

- get new builders started (I got a few mails from people who would like to build)

My goal is to have all those things done, eventually, in the following weeks/month. I do not want any work to be lost; that means that I am going to do all that is possible so that work that has been done (on areas already in the game, on areas partially built, or on areas that have been blocked in review stage for several months) will not get lost. I know the situation has not evolved for a very long time now, but please be patient for a little additional time. We are working, and progress is being made (the code to support area updating on the test port is about half-done thanks to Mask already).
