I have noticed that several of the older players are going broke from various reasons (from helping younger players to weddings, etc).
And since most of the training areas are "below you" when you are Level 45, I was wondering if an area could be made so that older players can gain money over time. I mean an area not like the Old School of Wonder or the Undermountain, where you need a large group to earn enough to make it worthwhile. Somewhere where a player can go to gain some money on their own. Now I see how this could be abused so it would have to have a requirement of some sort. Perhaps level and/or kismet requirement?
Just my thoughts

Older Players going broke
The problem with that is that the younger players sell all of *their* treasure early and then the Economy of the cities is really low-- like 4 silver.
Currently I am helping out with Bauldurs Gate(whenenver I can spare some time) and I would love to be able to do more. I would make time if I had a project to work on... im going to check the list...
Now that I think of it, I think the "random battles" would help aleviate this.

In relation to the older players lending money to the younger players, I think the main problem is that most of these players don't stay around long enough to pay you back at all. I know my character has given out numerous fortunes to new players (Money, lower level equipment, weapons) and never seen the players log on again. A suggestion may be to make sure the "younger" player is going to stay around before you give them something; maybe make them do some task before giving it to them.
As for the issue of hoarding of valuable items...why should I be forced to sell off my valuable items to make money? Why shouldn't I be able to go on gold runs to get funds instead, and keep any nice items I've earned? What happened to extra effort paying off?
Anyway, a lot of the more valuable items are nigh-impossible to sell under the new economy system. I remember a few months ago I got myself a nice magical item on one of my characters, and I went to some significant trouble to get it, because I wanted it for roleplay purposes, but after I was done with the roleplay, I wanted to sell it, and I had an awful lot of trouble selling it in Waterdeep, which I presume has the largest economy pool in the game, as it is by far the largest city. It took me around two months to find a time when a mob shopkeeper could afford to buy it from me.

Well, the only character of mine with any real money (or that HAD any real money) has been slowly going broke for a while. But I dont really have much use for money on that character except to give it away, which is why im going broke. Just from my point of view its not really a problem for me, just when I do hit rock bottom, I wont be able to give out monetary support anymore. Doesnt really hurt me, I just wouldnt be help those who might need it in the future (money wise). It doesnt really bother me when I give a character money and they dont log on again, because I know I did my best to help them along and to keep with their character, its their choice if it they didnt keep with the character.
Glim asks Gwain 'Can I be on the watch?!?'
Gwain raises an eyebrow.
