Recruitment

Post by Gregal » Thu Feb 09, 2006 8:27 pm

I was wondering, since we are talking about the game and having more people, what about recruitment and giving incentives for recruiting in the game, like jobs do for recruitment of other people. Say if they become a known player and continue playing the game a certain amount of time the person that referred them could get a gift or something. I was just wondering cause I just talked two people into playing FK because I talk about it all the time.

Thanks :D

Recruiting people is great and all, but as far as I know the game owners are operating FK at a loss. Purchases we make through Amazon might get them a little bit of money back, but probably not enough to cover their costs. Expecting some kind of gift (in game or in real life) would cost either additional time or money for the game owners.

Personally I think increasing the quality and quantity of RP should be incentive enough for recruiting, don't you?

Actually I was thinking about in game rewards, rewards that might help our character such as stat points, renames, maybe a special rp and such, nothing in real life. I wouldn't expect it, but it would also be incentive for people to want to make their character better and get more players in the game. :)

I don't think it's a good policy to start giving in game rewards for out of game actions. In fact, I don't think it's good policy to start giving any rewards for out of game actions. Rewards for individuals who recruit would eat up lots of valuable immortal time because they need to monitor the new recruits to make sure they actually play, they need to make sure those new recruits aren't the player who recruited them multiplaying to get rewards, they need to hand out these stat points/renames/special rps that you want. All of these in game benefits would take considerable time and take away from broader roleplaying opportunties that impact the entire player base.

I think the rewards lie IN the game:

It is free
You are in a safe enviornment
You get to play with other people, not just bots
The IMMs are active in the RPs constantly
Parties like Sune's, Shieldmeet, Waterdeep Fair, Strange witches falling...
Personalization: Obect renames and named pets
Players actively have a say in how to improve the game
Rewards: glory/kismet

Did I miss any?
Yes I did:

The problem with referral rewards becomes a quantity versus quality issue. I know this is duscussed in another thread re: should we increase our player base. But to reiterate, incentive to recruit does not guarantee good players. If we get good players, great. If we get players who are rough or green and they shape up into great RPers, great. If we end up with players whose only goal is to come in and powerMUD, twink all the quests, etc., we're worse off than with our existing player base.

Not to mention the issues when it comes to multi-accounting, which we've dealt with on more that one occaision in the past year: "It's... my roommate...yeah, sure it is."

Glory, stuff, etc. for referrals could be abused, easily, and chances are would. Better to let those players who would bring their friends along purely for the sake of sharing a fun game (which has it's rewards in-game, as Paskry said)

I agree completly with everyones words, It was just a thought. And although all of you managed to prove your points nowhere did you suggest any ideas that would have helped make people "get into" recruiting and helping the game. Objecting is great, but putting ideas in with the objections is better.

Thanks :D

On the subject of recruiting:

Leave it up to the player's own discretion,
Example:
if a person enjoys playing a First Person Shooter(FPS) over a Real Time Strategy(RTS) and doesn't like to read, then they probably wouldn't want to play

--That however does not mean that they wouldn't enjoy playing.
Like I said, leave it up to your own discretion.
