Is there anywhere stated the commonly recognized rules for the master apprentice relationship ?.
Specifically how obidient does an apprentice have to be and what should they expect in return for there obediance.
Does the rules vary by culture/alignment ? or have they been set down by Mystra and apply across all the users of the weave ?.

Hmm... it does vary a lot between individual wizards. There is a section in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting book, which says (my friend has it, so I can't check) something (paraphrasing) like, an apprentice is often used for menial tasks, etc.
How the apprentice is treated depends on the spellcaster's personality. A good spellcaster might treat their apprentice well. An evil one might enjoy tricking them, using them for dark spells, but in turn must be prepared for treachery. On the other hand, some evil wizards might inspire loyalty, out of true respect for the Weave.
I would say there are several rules that most wizards would have their apprentice adhere too:
1) Obedience
2) Loyalty
3) Hard work
But I'm not sure if there is any major, Realmswide set of apprentice laws. Let your character make 'em up, I say!

I have never heard of specific laws, thought the Obedience, Loyalty and Hard work rules you tell about seem the bases for me.
It's clear that being the apprentice of Halaster the mad won't be the same than being the apprentice of the old wizard of your village you know since you are a child.
It's for me a share of the apprentice work time between work for the master and lessons work (lessons and training about spells, as well as everything linked to that), the share ratio being different depending on the wizard character.

I like to think of apprentices almost like how a lawyer thinks of law student paralegals. You have them because you need the extra bodies to further your own goals, they are cheap labor considering the alternative, and they don't have the ego you'd run into with working along side another lawyer.
If Kilaad takes on an apprentice for whatever reason, it'd be because he needs something done research wise - and would probably pay them well for it...and just hope some of his subtle arcanist tricks rub off on the kid

Then you could take on an "independent study" student from the school of wonder (a young pc). But typically, an apprentice is taken for the same reason apprentices are taken in other professions - cheap labor
Of course, the more powerful the mentor gets, the less lightly the apprentice will be much use...making a general desire to pass on your trade to another you find "worthy" a good response too.
