Search Command and Finding/Making Spell Components
Search Command and Finding/Making Spell Components
Just a suggestion, but...
Maybe there could be an added use to the search command? While in a wilderness room you can find different items from foraging. The main idea would be to find different things to use as components, but you could find wood, or food. This would also be determined by your search skill and it would raise as you searched for things.
This could also be in a way a way of making the random progs in wilderness rooms appear (your foot wobbles, you bumb against a tree, you knock into a beehive).
Not going to list food or wood cos there so much food and only one wood.
Im going to list spell components and different ways that could maybe be added to be able to get them on your own instead of buy them. This will also include things other than the ones you could find using the search skill.
adders stomach - snakes could drop on death
some salt - command: BOIL - campfire near a water room (prob cant distinguish between salt water and normal water)
salted piece of meat - command: SALT - use salt on piece of fresh meat
beeswax - search
a scale - search or snakes, fish, etc could drop on death.
a feather - search
a slim reed - search
an earthstone - search (maybe in hills or mountains too instead of wilderness)
a perfectly smooth stone - search (same as earthstone)
sunflower seeds - search
some saffron seed - search
some horsetail hair - search or cut from a horse
Can anyone think of other things that could be found in the wilderness, maybe?
This might also be included with the post about cooking and other object transformations for a couple of the items. Also, didnt know if this would go into the skills forum or not because of the components part
Feedback is always welcome,
Thanks,

He, i really love the idea to be able to search for food in the wilderness
Concerning components i can see :
a piece of bark
some charcoal (maybe with some command to use)
some holy
spider silk (in forest infested by spiders ?)
pile of sand
pinch of sulphur (i don't know if it can be found in certain natural area like volcano)
powdered rhubarb leaf (with a POWDER command on the leaves)
bat guano
Other than search :
vial of blood : make it possible to fill some vials with blood from corpse
animal fat : gather it from animal corpse
fur : skinnable (may already be possible, i don't know)
hide : same

A lot of the thiggs mentioned can already be obtained within the game from various areas and mobs, i am not sure that all characters have access to all the areas that have these things but a list of the things that i have seen are.
Spiders web
bat Guano (on killing a mob)
Perfect stones
Earthstones
sand
charcoal
fur (on killing a mob)
bark
beeswax
feathers (on killing a mob)
bat wings (on killing a mob)
skeleton knuckles (on killing a mob)
blood in a vial (on killing a mob, but does not work as a component)
hide (on killing a mob)
scales (on killing a mob)
salt (on killing a mob)
I am sure there are many more that i have not found yet.

As monster drops, i can see too :
Yuan-ti eye
Minotaur horn
Adders stomach
Piece of grey slime
? from ooze or such?
or it's supposed to be something else? like from slug and the like?
For "Jar of dead red bugs", i wondered if it could be collected too in some places

Thinking further i actually kind of like the idea that not all of these items are available from all areas. It might be possible to setup a trade in components. For example there are some of the items that are freely available in the caverns of the underdark. And others that require quite long journeys to go and collect.
The issue is that currently it is very hard to setup a way of selling components to other players since shops are more convenient. As i understand it some component shops are PC run ? It would be good if components were generally harder to get for PC shopkeepers to encourge the shop keepers to interact with possible player supplyers.
For example PC shop keeper posts a want list on the notice board including a time and a place for delivery. This would allow players to search out the items and provide them and the PC shopkeeper to keep there stock levels up. This would also provide employment for other players and encourage exploration/adventuring and RP. And might even lead to setting up mercantile associations as long term RP groups.

Well if i theorically like the idea, i'm afraid there would not be enough spell components gathered (at least for the ones hard to get) to sell in shops for all the mages around, so a lot of mages would be stuck for some spells.
And if you make a group to go gather them, if you have a mage in the group, he will probably want to keep the components for himself (but if you can bring back as many as you want).
If there were so difficult components to gather, i would rather see that for high level powerful spells components.
But now it's just a personnal fear
I don't know how it would end in the game

Most of those things are already in game. And the related mobs drop the correct items.
E.g., have a ranger slice a mob than use salt on it -> salted meat.
E.g., wander around in the wilderness and you will find beeswax, stones, earthstones, and wood.
E.g., approach the correct mobs and you will get feathers.
E.g., kill the correct mobs and you will get scales, yuan-ti eyes, minotaur horns, grey slime, and so on.
Also, there are plenty of areas with collectible food. From kiwis to lemons to banas and watermelons.

Yeah, that i have seenAlso, there are plenty of areas with collectible food. From kiwis to lemons to banas and watermelons.
*mutters to himself about stupid seasons*
i have found some monster drops and components in wilderness, but what i liked here was to search for them in empty room rather than finding some on the ground here and there, ie having the possibility to gather bark in a forest room rather than walking the forest to have the change to find a piece of bark when there are trees all around.
The fact to find the component would be more the result of an action (search, gather, whatever) than a random find.

Thinking more about it, searching for natural components in some areas could use the search skill, the luck, and maybe some kind of knowledge or whatever skill, so all together it does not work all the time, and use some stamina so you can't do it over again and again, but it might be fun.

Though thinking of it, if i'm lucky to come upon some components, i will keep them as i know i might not find others for some times (maybe stacking quite some of them if it's not in an area i wander in often).
If i know i can try to find the component whenever i need, i will just stack what i need and search for some when i'm out of stock, a little i would if i can buy them in a shop, but that might be me
