Custom tailor clothes

Post by Glim » Fri Aug 11, 2006 11:16 am

Would it be possible to have a tailor shop that can make custom clothes?

Basically you could buy an expensive basic item and the shopkeeper would explain the cost is for him to custom tailor it, the item would be something like:

a plain cloth cut as a shirt

It would have all the layers set and everything already and it would have a prog that would allow you to rename it once, maybe with an OOC note saying nothing magical or extraordinary?

If this was allowed, how might you do this?

Or would this be too open for abuse?

Feedback is always welcome,
Thanks,

Several mobs, notably quest mobs, have programs on them to rename a generic item when it is given to the adventurer. I'm no coder, but have used this principal in some of the ideas for an area I'm working on.

I'd say that you probably couldnt leave it as a free-form rename - you'd be relying too heavily on player knowledge and ability to prevent too long names, broken colour codes and so forth. And there'd be shirts of dragon scale and mithril and all sorts in between I suspect.

My own solution would be to offer the player a series of choices which the mob would respond to in sequence, the end result being the new name.

what colour...
what length...
what frippery (wing collars, ruffles, cuffs etc)
what embroidery or motif

so...

a white dress wing collar shirt embroidered with a pink kitten

Could get a little cumbersome the more variation you wanted to offer, but the tailor could always look quizzically at them and say 'I'm a tailor not a magician' when they ask for too much.

It would also be down to you to make sure the end name was the right length even when made up of all the longest choices, but that's the borign bit.

it tolls for thee.

What has been done is offering variations on a single item. For example, colourizing a spell pouch, or a money pouch, or another similar item.

A generic renaming shop - while technically possible - is not advisable, because there would be no control over what is renamed into what. Daggers could be renamed into money pouches and so on.

If it's limited to one object having a limited number of variations, it's fine though. But the idea is to have a list of authorized renames, and have the PC choose from that list. Or perhaps use a limited rename, for example, rename a shirt into XYZ shirt, where "XYZ" is input by the player. They would then be able to input "{E0}a sky-blue". But here too is the possibility for wrong renames: what about "{30}a wooden" or "{50}a purple silk", if the base item is made of MATERIAL_CLOTH (and not wood nor silk)?
