Dwarves and Evils

Post by Athon » Mon Feb 27, 2006 10:30 pm

Having a very avid dwarf, especially one for the mines/forge, I've really come to be into the business of trade in the game. As such, I consistantly have to deal with characters in and out. This leads me to a short series of questions:

How are dwarves (Those from MH or naturally good alignment) supposed to react, treat, and interface with evils?

Should a dwarf that creates weapons/armour sell to evils, whether knowing that they are or not?

Would dwarves be more likely to sell to an evil for the sake of business or react in opposition?

Hopefully they're not too confusing. Any information is great appreciated.

Thanks
Sean

I would say this would all be up to your personal character's RP.
Glim asks Gwain 'Can I be on the watch?!?'
Gwain raises an eyebrow.

Dwarven priests aren't very likely to trade with evils, because...
1. Dwarven priests of moradin are Lawful Good
2. Dwarven priests are given certain spells to determine a person's character.
3. In a sense, dwarven priests of moradin are similar to human paladins (in dealing with evils), barring cultural differences

Other dwarves are more likely to trade with evils
1. Dwarves value ale, ore, and.. coin!
2. They're not necessarily Lawful Good
3. They do not have abilities available to them to determine a person's character (unless they experience a history with that person)

In general, it's how you RP it since there's no strict guidelines in being a dwarf. Of course, your friendly next door dwarven priest who is in charge of your well being is likely to chide you if he finds out.

Llanthyr's post summarised my opinion on this quite neatly, so I shan't reiterate in detail. I expect my priests to make efforts to discern the hearts of those they trade or travel with. I expect non-priests to follow the advice of my clergy or suffer the consequences.

However, I will point out that if the motivation for the trade is more OOC than IC the 'chiding' and other IC consequences will be considerably harsher. Making items to trade to your OOC buddies will get you an anvil dropped on your head.

Don't forget that nasty, evil little dwarves are fixture of fantasy writing... So I'd suspect there would be plenty of unscrupulous little dwarves selling to anyone with coin enough to buy. If the local priest chides you then you could probably turn a profit shanking him in a dark alley - but that seems a stretch for a dwarf. Maybe take out your frustration shanking an orc in an alley instead.

Nasty evil little dwarves are a fixture in the world of Narnia, and some other fantasy settings, not necessarily a fixture in the Forgotten Realms universe. A majority of the dwarven pantheon is Good to Lawful Neutral aligned, with a few exceptions that are evil. An occasional dwarf in the realms that is evil is a nice touch for flavor, if it becomes common, it's no longer Forgotten Realms.

Within this setting, evil dwarves are generally expected to be as rare as evil elves and have a similar counterbalance in players creating Duergar ( when they come in) as opposed to an evil 'surface' dwarf. To be honest, I'm not even 100% certain that you can create an evil dwarf.

It should be noted though, that even Duergar revere Moradin and model their attitudes on smithing after his. The notion of an avaricious dwarf is fine, (there is even a deity alogn those lines) but the idea that they would sell to just anyone after putting their heart and soul into a crafting is not so fine.
