starting spells

Post by Scylere » Mon Oct 16, 2006 2:09 am

I wanted to suggest that a non-aggressive spell be in the list of starting spells in character creation.

ex.
comprehend languages
detect magic
detect hidden

Just a spell that a non-aggressive mage would take when first starting out.

any reason behind this? or just because you would like to see it there?

My reasoning is for non-aggressive mages. Many wizards aren't out there just to blow holes through things.

well in the enterest of not giving anyone extra to do...
Just because you HAVE the power does not mean you have to use it...
With great power comes... something, forgot the rest

but you get the point...

I have a non aggressave mage that has burning hands but doesn't use it...
but... i never played her... she was boring lol

none the less... no need to have someone go out of their way for something you can overlook... No?

Was this meant to be instead of the offensive spell, or in addition to?

If it is in addition to, I don't think I agree. The starting wizard should be a complete novice.

If it is instead of... I agree in theory. But as Zach said, it is a lot of work for someone to create an entirely new option. Better probably just to RP it after you gain the spells later on.

Interesting idea, though. :)

We could start wizards out similar to the D20 book rules:
A wizard begins play with a spellbook containing all 0-level wizard spells (except those from her prohibited school or schools, if any; see School Specialization) plus three 1st-level spells of your choice. For each point of Intelligence bonus the wizard has (see Table 1–1: Ability Modifiers and Bonus Spells), the spellbook holds one additional 1st-level spell of your choice.
since we don't have 0 level spells (cantrips) discount that, and just give the 3 spells + INT bonus
"There is no safety for honest men except by believing all possible evil of evil men."

Kregor - Ranger of Tangled Trees
Rozor - Lady Luck's Duelist
Tygen - Ranger-Bard of Mielikki

Ooo..if that happened, could we have a choice to which three we start with? Then we could customize.

But like Zach said, if there are other things in the game that are more important for the coders, please go for that. I just wanted to give a suggestion.
