Half-Drow Names.

Post by Cret » Thu Nov 23, 2006 10:49 am

Recently I created a half-drow and was awaiting approval. I have gone though probably 40+ approvals for names and such and have never seen this untill yesterday.

You character name does not fit that race and class.

Thats the short version cause i didnt copy it exactly.

But.. what 'defines' what is approporate for a class/race in half-drow?

Character was: Norroar

No longer in my account to deletion. But I am curious as to why it was denyed and how you find suitable names for such creatures...

The guidelines which we follow when authorising or disapproving a name are listed in Help Names. Although not explicitly stated, we do not actually need to give a reason for why a name was disapproved. That said, I'll try to provide a general answer which may be useful to others in a similar situation

The current syntax when approving (or not) new names allows very few additional comments to be sent to the player - if it is too similar to an existing name, if it is clearly fictional and if it is felt not to fit race or class.

I will not second guess the decision to disallow your chosen name but would point out that
- that choice brings up a number of hits on search engines which may have influenced the decision
- it does not fit well with our setting. Drow names usually being more sibilant, full of Z's and X's and so on.
- it falls foul of the no word made of two other words rule 'nor roar', though this may be incidental.

As to your 'I've done this forty times before' and never seen this...

perhaps the times a name you chose was disapproved previously that option was not selected as the reason, or perhaps you were very lucky in your choices of names.

Hope this helps

Not arguing. It helps to know all this.

Would it matter the name of a half-drow should the mother be human? Whould that half-drow then take a more human name?

Well, usually the mother is human. Rarely would drow women would ever tolerate having a child with a human. Its weakness, to them. Especially if it was forced on them. They can be killed for such things, them and the kid.

I think it more of comes down to what society the halfdrow in question is raised in, and who they were named by. If they were raised in a drow society, they'd are more likely to have drow-like names, and human names for human society. My own halfdrow has a rather human name, being raised by a human.

There's my opinion and the like.
