Other website features

Post by Mask » Thu Dec 07, 2006 11:03 pm

We are planning on a fairly major re-design of the website which would involve adding several new features and so on.

Some of the thing we are debating adding are:

1. A photo gallery for storing player art work and the like.
2. Move main website to a wiki format to allow wider spread edit ability.
3. IC blogs? OOC blogs?

Any other ideas or suggestions?

What about a section for player pics too?

I don't know if this will be part of a hosting setup, or will ideally become moot because the MUD will be so stable...but perhaps a script that polls the IP of the game and reports (with a little flag on the homepage or something) whether the game is up or down?

Im a big fan of having the who list posted on the website that way at a quick glance we can see who is online. Might also help lure in people who look at the players who are playing and might be a good way to lure them in.

1. Art gallery... why not, but then again, wouldn't artists be better off posting on sites with higher traffic, and/or sites especially dedicated to that? (Deviantart or similar). They would get much more feedback - and most likely more interesting feedback - from those sites.

2. Wikipedia. Big yes from me.

3. Blogs... that would be a no from me. OOC blogs wouldn't make sense on FK, just as a general "Chat" channel does not exist in game, and just like there's no "Chat" section on the forum. There are already free sites for hosting blogs, and I am not too keen on spending FK hosting room on blogs. As for IC blogs, I do not think it is a good idea either. You shouldn't know every thought and event in a character's life without learning it ICly, in game. And if characters want to count major events of their life, they can publish a book in-game, or submit an article to the Kingdom's Journal.

Dalvyn, there is nothing to say that they can't post their art or player pics or whatever to more than one site :-).

Re: Blogs, I am attempting to brainstorm about ways we can put more player generated content onto the site. Suggestions on how to achieve this would be good :-)

Could we get a calendar with links to planned roleplays including time details and maybe a link to a player written summary of what's gone before if it's an on-going event?

A calendar - like the one we used to have - would be a great idea.

As for summary of ongoing roleplays, I think those are better done in-game. We have boards in game that can be accessed in-game and are perfect for spreading this kind of information: not only are they IC (because characters have to actually go to one to get the information, instead of just clicking on link on a website), but some are also access-restricted. For example, if a roleplay involves various factions, the information posted on the various faction boards might be different.

Re: putting more player generated content on the site... I'd rather have more player-generated content in the game first. :) Books, posts on in-game boards, and so on. I'm a firm believer that IC information should be found and learned in-game, because that creates more opportunities for interaction (asking where more information can be found, asking who might know more, and so on). Just cliking on a link does not add anything to the game itself.

More OOC player-generated content is fine though (but that's already what we are going to achieve with the wiki, no?)

I'm all for a more smooth interactive website... the wikisite would be awesome...
I agree with Dal. I would like to see more game content IN game more then on the website... The website should lure them into playing... not tell them all the game information.

I would like to see the java client ON the website... integrated into it... like the chat room...

Have all the in game help files on the website in the same-ish format as they are in game...

....
That's all I have for now

It'd be quite nice to have a RP log section. Where people can post interesting/exciting roleplays. With these on the website new people can feel encouraged to try us out.

1. I'm with Dalvyn on this.

2. I'm in favout of a wiki, as long as there's some control over who can post on it. There needs to be an official FK "cannon".

3. FK was the first MU* I stayed on because of the lack of OOC chat. IC blogs are a bad idea in my mind because anything that is IC should stay IC. I'd like to blog about my chars, but I'd also hate for anyone to read those blogs and use that info IC against me... If a char has a story to tell, comission a bard IC to tell it for you, or use myspace.
