Cooking and other object transformations

Post by Dalvyn » Sun May 21, 2006 7:37 pm

I'm looking to add small programs to food items.

The older amongst you might remember the Ultima games, in which you could, for example, mix a "piece of wood" with "a piece of cloth" and "a flask of oil" to produce a torch; or where you could use "some flour" with "a flask of water" to produce a lump of dough, that you could then "cook" in an oven to get "a loaf of bread". If you had a rolling pin, you could flatten it, add apple slices, and cook it into an apple pie.

What I am looking for is similar processes that would transform one or more objects into other objects. They wouldn't give any special benefit, but would just produce echoes and hopefully add to the roleplay.

To make it easier, I would like the suggestions to follow this format:
Object(s) required: (some objects will be junked, others will remain)
Keyword: (the keyword to trigger the action)
Echoes: (what is shown to the character, and to those in the same room)
Product: (the result of the action)
For example:

Objects required: flask of water (junked), bag of flour (junked)
Keyword: mix
Echoes: You pour some water on the flour and mix it into a lump of dough. $N mixes water with flour and obtains some dough.
Product: a lump of dough

Objects required: a lump of dough (junked), fire (not junked)
Keyword: cook
Echoes: You place a lump of dough near the fire. $N places a lump of dough near the fire. (after some time) The dough turns darker. (after some time) The bread is ready!
Product: a loaf of bread

Feel free to rewrite those two examples with better English and more interesting echoes, of course.

Thanks for the help.

Note: Just to make sure ... I am not looking into recipe for powerful objects (e.g., no sword + piece of adamantium + ettercap blood to produce +5 vorpal sword of killing-everything-that-moves-and-breathes), just for mundane transformation of objects.

Use Note Architecture?

Post by Raona » Thu Jun 01, 2006 11:33 am

This is actually a slight aside, but might it be possible to use the note engine for making things like this? (That DO nothing, but look as the creator might like?) That is, allow the creator to make, for example, a toy of their own design, where they write the description with CREATE WRITE and and the adjective with CREATE SUBJECT and the name of the object with CREATE TO, if you take my meaning? This might also reduce clamour for object renames, and give people the creativity to sort of code their own cool stuff, which could be copied and promulgated throughout the realms if it was a great idea.

(The baby items just put into the game come to mind as great examples of neat, RP-only items that might be made this way, had not some coder had the idea for them first! They are great, by the way. Nice to give as gifts to the expecting, hint hint!)

Working on a place in Calimport where you will be able to buy quills of different colors, as well as possibly special ink to refill with. :)

BUMP!

I have recently had occasion to begin cooking a good deal, and something occurred to me. We have peppers in the game, and though I haven't seen beans, we've got plenty of cheese-- how about some chili? :D

I imagine it'd use the cooking pot, and be a sort of soup, perhaps requiring any or all of the three ingredients listed above-- or it could require beans and pepper, and then it could be made into one variety or another of cheesy chili by adding one of the Realms' assorted cheeses.

Edit: OO! and cheesy bread. Everybody loves cheesy bread!

Chili
Ingredients: pepper (junked), beans (junked), cheese (optional, junked)
Keyword: BOIL chili, SPREAD cheese
Echoes: A pungent aroma fills the air as you cook some chili.
You sprinkle cheese over the chili and it begins to melt.
Product: A bowl of chili, A bowl of chili with (type of cheese)

Cheesy Bread
Ingredients: A lump of dough (junked), cheese (junked)
Keywords: SPREAD cheese, BAKE bread
Echoes: You sprinkle cheese liberally over the dough.
The dough darkens and the cheese melts as you place it by the fire.
Product: A loaf of (type of cheese) bread

I suspect similar recipes could be used for fruit breads (if they don't already exist), or cinnamon bread if cinnamon were to make its way into game-- perhaps when and if Calimshan is given a greater presence?

The problem with that is actually that we have plenty of cheese types. :)

For this to work, I would have to add a program to each cheese item in the game (as well as to all new cheese items coming with future areas).

The chili part is most likely possible though. Send a mail to fkbuilders and I'll put it in my TODO box. :)
