Improved companion?

Post by Tierney » Mon Nov 17, 2003 3:36 pm

There is a feat called 'improved familiar' which gives magic users the abilty to obtain a non-standard creature as a familar. I was wondering if there could be an 'improved companion' feat, which would give the same option to rangers. Maybe even make a quest out of getting it like with some of the other ranger skills.

Making a quest out of getting it like with some of ther other ranger skills? What do you mean by that? I think it is a cool idea, but if so should also be allowed to wizards.

Some prestige classes allow for things such as Infernal/Celestial companions and such. I would personally rather wait to see those things come in, than make a new feat for Rangers to have more unusual companions.

Improved Familiar was a way to regulate which types of Familiars a wizard would have access to, varying upon level. As a Psuedo dragon is an option for Familiars, it seemed way too powerful to allow a first level wizard to have access to a familiar that was better than he was.

Now, Imp. Familiar I believe requires you be at least 7th level for access to some of the more powerful familiars. That is the D&D aspect of it, if I remember right. I could be wrong due to not having a PHB in front of me at the moment.

Besides, why would a Ranger go out of his way to look for more and more powerful animal companions? Wizards seek out Familiars for aid in spellcasting. IMHO Rangers find animal friends in the woods, whom adopt the ranger, almost as much as the Ranger adopts them.

Rangers are not the only ones that use companions. Druids also use it and like to have a strong companion to help protect them and the forests they are striving to protect.
