Gems in lapidary
Is there some way to tell which gems can and cannot be used in lapidary? I'll add details if it would help, but for now I'll just say I discovered that some gems seem not to be counted as gemstones when it comes to making jewelry. It could be I'm not skilled enough at it, but the message was "You cannot make jewelry with that."
Dear Enemy: May the Lord hate you and all your kind, may you be turned orange in hue, and may your head fall off at an awkward moment.
I might need to be corrected on this, but if they are not type treasure I do not think they can be set in jewelry. Gems that are type component I am not sure of though. Back when setting was introduced anything could be set, which created silly things like necklaces set with cheese and such. I am not sure definitively if gemstones can be both set with a component flag and treasure flag.
May you find the knowledge you seek. If you find something else, it is still knowledge, and as such, still a gain.

From what I know of building, they can't-- but I remember there being a question once about darts fitting into spell component bags, which as far as I know was resolved by using 'put all bag' to get them in there (it doesn't block non-spell-component-type items that way), maybe that could be used in this case as well?

The 'put all bag' solution is to bypass the bar on non-components being put into a bag (And should only be used for components that are not flagged component but are needed for a spell. Dont let me catch you shoving shields and pitchforks in there )
I don't believe that there is a parallel in that for the lapidary code. Setting a gem checks for item_type_treasure and prevents any other item being used (for the reasons Oghma stated above, platinum rings set with jars of sardines, necklaces adorned with muddy boots).
If you have a burning desire to make use of a particular gemstone or other (suitable) item I would suggest dropping a line to the applications e-mail address and asking that its flag be amended. I'm more than happy to do that for you.
