Do matches exist in Fk? or should they?

Post by Granel » Wed Nov 19, 2003 1:06 am

I always wondered and thought about the existense of matches, I'm fammiliare with sulphur ones that are homemade that usually burn down more houses than they light. Those medievil or early rennisance things are the precussor of regular matches, so I'm just wondering do you think they exist?
Thanks.

From all the books I have read that were based in a similar time frame I don't think so. The characters usually used flint and steel, and it always appeared to be second nature to me.
I am ready to meet my Maker. Whether my Maker is prepared for the great ordeal of meeting me is another matter.

I'd have to say 'no'. Making matches is a tricky business, as near as I understand it.
Matches are basically potassium and sulphur (i think). It takes a pretty delciate combinations of chemicals to make the modern matches we have today.
Then again, the Gondsmen might have them. Thundertwigs, anyone?
Crazy gnomes.

So that's a pretty definate 'maybe'. Or a for certain perhaps.
I'll get back to you.

An idea came to me when reading this post, what about having flint and steel items sold by various MOBs and maybe a syntax of strike, with wood and it would light the wood. This would be the same as ignite except you have to have the flint and steel held or in your inventory, either syntax could be used: ignite or strike, you would still suffer fails the same as ignite.

I think this would add more RP and a more realistic atmosphere to the MUD.

Edit: To make this more understandable, this idea was to have the requirement of flint and steel in your inventory in order to use the ignite skill. Also what about having a echo when igniting the wood, instead of just *You ignite a piece of wood* "PC strikes his flint and steel together but the feeble sparks do not ignite the wood" "PC strikes his flint and steel together and his piece of wood begins to grow into a fire"
