Increasing Spell Availability

Post by Lerytha » Wed Aug 08, 2007 3:51 pm

Now, I'll say two things before I get to the meat of the matter:

a) Yes, I am biased because I play a mage, so bear that in mind
b) Yes, I am aware that the imms are gradually integrating spells into the game so as to judge their affect on balance and the like.

On with the proposition, anyway.

I believe that, with domain spells being available to clerics, allowing spells such as time stop, gate (and other high-level spells) to be cast, there should be a way for wizards, other clerics (and bards too?) to access some of the higher-level or rarer spells. Although the problem is not a major one, it is a source of (albeit very minor, I'm not moaning) contention that priests are able to have access to some wonderful spells that wizards of similar levels cannot obtain.

So, what are the issues here?

We don't want to suddenly have tonnes of spells that are potentially unbalancing, introduced into the game. However, perhaps there could be a list of the spells available to priests through domain slots. This list could then be made available, and all wizards could apply to research one (or two?) of the spells from that list. Hopefully there would be a decent enough cross-section, enabling spells to be given to those who apply to research them. These could then be passed on to other characters through scrolls, or teaching.

Maybe glory or experience or just gold could be used instead, to buy spells from a famous wizard shop?

Basically, I just thought I'd open this idea for discussion. Because yes, I really want to cast timestop, if I'm honest. ;) (that's slightly tongue-in-cheek, of course). It might also allow imms to monitor the affects of certain spells, before writing them into area code?

Let me know what y'all think!

One issue I know of is that resistances are still a bit buggy. They would need to be fixed before powerful spells are made available. Another issue would be that certain spells are indeed powerful and would be better served to be available after teaching or as a quest reward.
May you find the knowledge you seek. If you find something else, it is still knowledge, and as such, still a gain.

Resistances are not the only problem.

My first idea was to introduce some of those higher-level spells through specific casters then let them spread the knowledge by training others.

That is also why I started working on a new teaching/apprentice system back in February. There have been many lengthy discussions on this system, and many long period of time when discussion stopped altogether. I share your frustration that nothing has come of it yet.

I'm just a (new) builder, but is there anything the rest of us can do to help you keep the ball rolling on the new system? I, for one, would be happy to contribute whatever I can in that arena.

priests...

I know priests get domain spells and it seems a bit unfair, but having talked to many other priests/priestess ICly and OOCly, it seems it's very difficult to find trainers for these spells. Most of the trainers for the spells clerics can use are from wizard trainers that don't train clerics.

Just my two cents, I've found it so much easier to find trainers for my wizard than for my cleric.

I second Dalvyns comment.

We really do need the new training system as currently not that many mages could scribe these wonderful spells that they might learn.

If there is anything that i could do to help get this system in i would love to help, as even beyond new spells or correct saves i think this is priority number one.
