Reviewing game organisations: The Waterdeep Watch

Post by Kelemvor » Mon Nov 19, 2007 1:37 pm

Our help file wrote:The Waterdeep City Watch
The Waterdeep City Watch is made up of concerned law abiding citizens of
Waterdeep. The Watch is led by Commander Marcus, Battleguard of Tempus. The Watch is said to be recruiting, offering a regular wage and the chance for advancement within its ranks. Those LAWFUL citizens of Waterdeep interested in joining the Watch should seek out Commander Marcus. The successful recruits will then be able to attend the City Watch Training Academy.
This Help File needs updating to reflect the current situation

Wizards of the Coast have some excerpts from the City of Splendors source book relating to the Waterdeep Watch

The Waterdeep City Watch was revitalised and reformed last year in a process which could well be the model I'll follow for your the organisations which are deemed the best bet for a make over following this review.

Well-supported in areas and equipment the Watch has a distinct role backed up by an ICly created list of laws and rules. Members are recruited, trained, paid and promoted according to ongoing roleplay.

There are no plans to alter this organisation, but I thought it would make for a more complete picture to include this in our discussion.

For me, this is a good example of what the game needs from an organisation. Granted, it works better than most because of it's very specific remit and the fact that there are always some rule broken in Waterdeep, but this is the role model we should aspire to.

Personally I really like the Watch.

While there is obvious room for abuse by Watchmen, I haven't heard of any recent incidents.

I think they add plenty of flavor and even help promote better RP (as I've seen the Watchmen [including females Raona - don't jail me!] do in the past).

I think it's safe to say The Watch has a permanent spot in this game with plenty of Imm and area support. :)

About the only thing I'd personally change about the watch is the scope of it. FR has the Lords Alliance, which serves many of the same purposes as the city watch, but covers many of the large cities that FK already has in-game (primarily Waterdeep, Berdusk and Silverymoon).

Beyond this minor quibble, I agree with Kelemvor.

The Lord's Alliance, however, is only called together when there is an immediate threat. IE an orc army marching toward Daggerford.

I would like to ask, if I may, do characters who do not have watchmen characters feel that there enough watchmen in the game? Not enough?

Oh, there's plenty around when you don't need one. When you do though...

*crickets chirping*

Hehe
Glim asks Gwain 'Can I be on the watch?!?'
Gwain raises an eyebrow.
Gwain seems to display a look of complete horror for a second...

Honestly I have an Alt I would love to get into the watch but have been unable due to existing organization/alt rules. A small reason I am happy to see them rediscussing all of this =)

Where there are no watchmen there is no crime, where there are watchmen there is always crime :D

I don't know how I would like an organization that was also based out of Waterdeep that covered the other cities of Silverymoon, Daggerford, ect.

A while back IC someone mentioned starting up a player run organization that would cover the roads between those cities and safe guard those cities.

If an organization like that was based in like Daggerford, rather than Waterdeep I would be more inclined to be behind it. The city of orgin of the "watch guard" organizations in my opinion should be different. IT spreads the RP out a bit, and that way they are not stepping down on the other organizations toes in this matter. It's one thing being part of the fighters guild and the watch... cause the fighters guild is more like a gentlemen's club that everyone can join rather than an organization per say... and then having two watch groups fighting over criminals behaviors in Waterdeep proper. If we could spread out the ground for the other, I think people would enjoy it a bit more.

Especially if there was an interior policing force.. The Watch.
And an exterior one.. since a LOT of plot which deals with conflict happens on the roads outside the cities.
Confusion heard his voice, and wild uproar Stood ruled, stood vast infinitude confined;
Till at his second bidding darkness fled, Light shone, and order from disorder sprung.

I think this organization is a good start. But I see a few links missing to the chain. I would like to see Magister and the Guard added as well. The Magisters should be a no brainer as they are the judges of Waterdeep.

The last time I checked, which was some time ago, there wasn't very much activity in the Watch... but then again. Who am I to point fingers.
I am ready to meet my Maker. Whether my Maker is prepared for the great ordeal of meeting me is another matter.
