Squire Inquiry

Post by Foden » Thu Dec 13, 2007 12:56 am

I have obtained a high enouph level where I think I better start my squire class to become a paladin before I hit 50. My current squire is never on, or not on when I am on. Is there a paladin, squire, or knight, who can meet me IC and help me get started?

If you ask about in character and have a bit of patience you will come across a few very soon, I assure you. Also if you posted on the in-game noteboard, that is a good start because it alerts current paladins to your name and to keep an eye and ear open.

Just a piece of advice, try not to level too quickly if you seek the path of squire and ultimately paladin. You should allow a bit of learning and growth room for when you are classed as a squire, and then again as you are classed as a paladin. One thing paladins will look for in pages is potential, potential to grow and learn as I said, and in code terms that means leaving room for leveling and progressing in skill levels.

I hope that helps and keep looking IC. You'll find someone soon or someone will find you, ultimately that overbearing fate brings us all together. ;)

I believe I'm right in saying that you were advised to submit a background and application before squiring could begin. At this point in time I am aware that you wish to become a squire and am waiting that application.

If you haven't already, please look through the relevant help files and posted notes on the squiring process.

Just send the background information application to

fkapplications@lists.skynet.ie

I apologize for not sending this sooner, but my personal message folder has been full for awhile.
May you find the knowledge you seek. If you find something else, it is still knowledge, and as such, still a gain.

Might be the wrong place to ask but I didn't find another thread. And yes, I tried the search function ;)

How fitting is it for a squire to ask a knight for squire-lessons? Are they to wait for the/a knight to adress them or can they ask (freely), it not being assumptive of them?

F.e. we type who and see a knight online which we know ICly, who knows we are a squire etc., is the squire then allowed to use f.e. amulet to contact the knight?

Thanks :)

There is absolutely no reason why a Squire would not contact a Knight and ask about lessons. If your Knight is not able to complete one at that time or has other plans, they will be able to tell you.

I appreciate that you are wary of logging on Squires as soon as you see a Knight, not wanting to overhwlem them with requests. However, if they do not know that you are on or assume you are off doing something else, then they are unlikely to look you up.

One general note here, regarding the newly knighted characters. They will not be taking on Squires until they've at least had a month or so to enjoy their new status and their own personal roleplay. Please do not hassle them. Hassle Sir Feinn instead, or me ;)

I might be blind but I don't know why anyone has mentioned directly-

Squires start at pages who generally start at level 10 with a lot of roleplay. Squire's levels don't come much closer to that to begin with. As lessons go on, is when you earn levels. How can you earn levels to be experienced in your profession when you have not even began it?

Levels are a gradual thing for squires and paladins. That process goes hand in hand with their learning.

If I might morph Mele's comments into a question - what's the right way to go about a paladin RP?

While it's been kind to me, I don't think making your first PC a Paladin is generally a wise move. You are too eager to explore the world and have too much to learn to play the humble page, cleaning the stables, very well.

Should a hopeful Paladin attempt to become a page while still very young? (Before they could survive the travels required to learn about being a Paladin from the knights of the realms?) My personal take on this is yes, I think having guidance early on is critical, and as the number of paladins in-game grows it should become more practical.

What level should one aim to be come knighting time? I've been told the lower the better, definitely under 30. (I actually put that into the Paladin helpfile.) I'm just now at the point of finding out the truth of this - as a new knight, there is a ton of new stuff to learn, and the higher your level the harder that becomes, as I understand it.

When to pick a faith? On this my experiential wisdom is don't make a point of picking a faith, make a point of learning about them. When the right time to join faith comes for your PC, they'll know it! Should this choice be colored by the Paladin faith rules? Perhaps, but in a way that's the tail wagging the dog. If your PC turns out to be really in tune with a faith that doesn't have any Paladins, they may have been meant to be a different type of warrior. Starting out as a "Paladin" just makes sure that option is within reach, it doesn't commit you to it. ...and if your PC doesn't think Torm, Tyr, and Helm are at least pretty darn groovy, they probably won't enjoy the Paladin role anyway.

I think the current Paladin helps are very good, but they don't say much about being a page; that might be something worth adding in, at least once it becomes practical in view of the availability of knights. (The current ones have their hands full with squires, I think!)

Some of the above is detailed in my original posts (now named How To become a Paladin) about the process of becoming a paladin. Feel free to use that to amend or expand the Help File

If a character is created with the intention of becoming a paladin then they have to be faithed before lessons begin. They therefore need to be at least level 10 to begin lessons.

The terminology I employ is:

page - a warrior who has indicated that they wish to take lessons

squire - a warrior who has begun lessons with a knight

A squire must have a minimum of 15 charisma (friendly) so the hopeful character should ensure that they have planned their progress in the earliest levels to ensure they can fulfill this requirement.

A character wishing to begin lessons should not really advance their levels beyond 20-30 as the expectation is for more hours spent roleplaying than levelling.

During the course of lesson taking the character should not level above 39.
This is as much pragmatic as a sign of roleplay intent, since levelling to 40 removes all excess experience and makes learning skills and prayers considerably more difficult.

My own personal rule of thumb is that pages and squires should have on average at least 5 hours of playing time per level.

I remember Kelemvor saying that there isn't a reason for a squire not to contact a knight.

Does this mean that it is alright for a player who is not a squire to contact a knight he/she doesn't know, to let them know they wish to take lessons?

Uhm , another question, how are we to hassle Feinn or you, Kelemvor?

We all know you are a very busy Imm and Feinn is also busy with many things so we don't want to waste your time with clinging on your backs and begging ;)

A new hopeful should read through all of the posts I've put up in the past regarding how to become a paladin.

If they have questions, feel free to PM me.

A Squire who has begun lessons and lost their knight, returned after an absence or who is having difficulty meeting up with their knight should PM me and I will intervene or pass on messages.

If you see Sir Feinn online, send him a tell or otell.

If you are really stuck, use the ASK channel to see if I'm around.
