Apprenticeship

Post by Duranamir » Mon Jan 07, 2008 10:17 am

Given the new teaching system now allows the teaching of spells or skills by any player who has reached a good level of experience. In FR terms are there generally accepted norms for taking an apprentice ? and what is the expected relationship.

Should an apprentice be tied to one master ?

What Duties does the apprentice have to the master ?

What duties does the master have to the apprentice ?

Can and should a master charge for teaching ?

How does an apprenticeship end ?

I ask these questions to see what the general opinion is realising that this is in the end a personal RP choice.

In so far as I can tell, these are HUGE questions with answering matching in magnitude. I've played a character who has both been on the learning and teaching end of apprenticeship, and pre-teach changes, I can tell you there are a very wide variety of possible responses. In my humble opinion the only thing the change to the "teach" command should really accomplish as far as the Role-play aspect of the apprentice/master system goes, is the coded benefits. Do keep in mind that as far as "learning" goes, theres much more to learn about being a wizard then say...throwing a fireball. I hope this helps, and keep in mind that my answer is purposefully vague.

The answer to every one of those questions would depend on the particular rp. Goodies will, in my opinion be the one student/master no charge, teacher honor bound to teach the apprentice, apprentice trusts the teacher in all matters... so on and so fourth. Then the evils are going to be the exact opposite.

Goodies can charge for apprenticeships as well. Apprenticeships are meant to be (according to most Forgotten Realms stuff) difficult for people to get, and they pay for it with manual labour, favours, or just gold. Most apprenticeships take this form. The main difference between "good" masters and "bad" masters, is that the "bad" masters create a relationship of fear, the "good" masters a relationship of trust. A wizard should probably always charge money, tasks or the like, for an apprenticeship if only to recuperate the money lost by providing for a pupil. At the very least, it helps the pupil understand that magic isn't something without cost.

This is why the new teaching system proposed will help re-create these relationships as they are meant to be. At the moment, a wizard with an apprentice can't teach much code-wise and if they want to teach anything code-wise, they generally have to give their pupils some money. With the new system, a wizard can charge their pupils and restore that balance.

But as has already been said, it is all down to individual roleplay. Some evil wizards might decide not to be nasty to their apprentices. Some good people might be really grumpy people and make their apprentices hate them. Possibilities are endless. :)
