Brew - odd twist since new code update

Post by Nedylene » Thu Jan 10, 2008 1:22 am

Unfortunately I cannot copy paste with Marty's Fang. Before the code update came in when you failed miserably at brew the flask/potion bottle/et cetera blew up in your face and you got the message that acid eats away at your skin or you resist the acid etc. With the new code update when you fail miserably at brew you now become an acid breathing dragon that breaths acid at yourself. The messages are as follows:

Akordia misses the mark, exhaling a cloud of acidic breath which barely catches you.
Akordia breaths a cloud of acid which envelops you.

On average I get the chance to breath acid on myself 4-5 times each miserable failure. While it did hit like this before the acid is now hitting HARDER then before the code update. I do not know how many hit points Akordia has but it is hitting between 1%-3% harder save for one time I believe I had a critical hit against myself and knocked myself down by 30%. The hitting harder and damaging more I can deal with.. but it is just weird to breath acid at yourself like a dragon.

It seems that what is happening is that when brew fails, it's casting acid breath, the dragon breath spell, on the person. I don't think this is so much a problem with the spell message, I never knew it was used for this purpose. A different spell might be more appropriate to use for brewing failures, one tailored to brewing itself.

Perhaps its time to remove that aspect of the failure anyway.

All it does is force players to strip naked to brew so that their clothes and containers arent erased.

Loss of components, flask and a bit of hitpoint loss due to burn/scald damage seems far more sensible.

I'm with Kelemvor on that one.

Let's remove the acidic explosion that is just plain frustrating and not challenging.

I'm not understanding this, Kelemvor. Are you suggesting that a character who is new at brewing should permanently lose hit points whenever they fail? Wouldn't this drive people away from brewing in the first place, as the eventuality of failing too many times means that your character has a maximum of 0 hit points from trying to brew potions, and must now be abandoned because s/he will never leave the realm of the dead for longer than a microsecond?

Please please please tell me I read this thread wrong, just now.

Hehe.... Given Kelemvor's domain, I don't think he'd mind more company due to the result of a permanent loss of HPs. But I do believe he was making a funny :P

Just to be clear - I said still retain some burn or scald damage... Somethign curable by a priest - at no time did I indicate that it should be a permanent HP reduction.

Merely that there if there were to be some hazard involved it should be of a form that did not amount to a risk of losing clothes and containers.

Old thread bumping.

Where are we on removing equipment damage from brew failure? Seemed a rather popular concept and its been a while since this thread was made. People with burnt equipment want to know!
