Umberlee

Post by Penryn » Mon Oct 20, 2003 5:29 am

I was curious, I believe I read somewhere that some sea elves followed the goddess Umberlee, within the Sea of Fallen Stars... I wasnt sure if this was correct or not though, perhaps someone on the boards could tell me and tell me if this is a possibility to be applied for or not..

Sea Elves worship Deep Sashelas though, why would a large majority of the already small amount of Sea Elves turn to the worship of an evil human goddess when they have their own personal watery god of an elven pantheon?

Although underwater creatures do have their own racial dieties some do worship Umberlee. She includes unda da sea in her domain so it would not be that unusual.

Disney would so sue Umberlee.

And Micheal is right, there's always a few exceptions to the rule but they are not that common.

Umberlee

Post by Micheal » Sat Dec 13, 2003 5:27 am

Lets actually talk Umberlee here. Now, in the new rules waveservents are alittle different, they have tenticles for arms and poison barbs all over their bodies. I wanted to know who is in charge of determining the divine ranks of Umberlites.

I would like to know alittle information about the faith of Umberlee in this game as opposed to the old book, and the new book.

Ive got a question about Umberlees faith as I dont know much about it, would sailors (and pirates) follower Umberlee or would they just be scared to death of her?

Basically they venerate her out of fear. For the same reason everyone invites Beshaba to parties, so she doesn't decide to show up anyway offended.

Fear, respect, stuff like that yes. It is better to offer a prayer or offering to a diety rather than ignoring them and hoping for the best. (everyone likes gifts you know). Even though prayers and offerings are in no way a failsafe way to keep on someone's good side, it doesn't hurt either (unless you have bad tastes in offerings, hehehe).

Yes, but would they ever actually follow Umberlee. As in do a quest and get a symbol.

Also, what is expected of followers, im not sure since I have almost no material on Umberlee. Are they expected to wish others die at sea? Sink ships and let them drown? Ive found some sites online but they have given almost no of the information im looking for, such as dogma and the like.

Glim -

Umberlee Dogma:
The sea is a savage place, and those that travel it had best be willing to pay the price of challenging Umberlee's domain. All should know the Bitch Queen and fear her, for the wind and the wave can reach everywhere if sufficiently angered. Fair offerings bring fair winds to sea travelers, but those that do not pay their respects will find that the sea is as cald as Umberlee's heart. Spread the word of the might of Umberlee, and let no service be done in her name without a price. Make folk fear the wind and wave unless a cleric of umberlee is there to protect them. Slay those who ascribe sea and shore storms to Talos.

Umberlee clergy are charged with spreading respect for Umberlee by preaching of the doom she has wrought in the past, and what is too come. The sell their presence aboard ships to give hope to people that they have a safe voyage (though in the end it is Umberlees decision) and sell certain spells.
Umberlee serves Talos along with Auril and Malar. Talos has been encroaching upon her portfolio and since she lacks the strength to fight him, she has been trying to distract him with romantic intrigue. She fights Selune and Valkur (to whom sailors pray to bring them home safely), Chauntea (for her dominion over land), and Sune(Whose beauty she envies).

Hope that helps

Most sailors probably follow Valkur (for protection from Umberlee  ), actually worshipping her would be for the more violent types, i.e. Pirates and whatnot.

Her priests and uh ..what's that PrC ..Waveservants I believe, purposely sink ships that don't pay tribute to her while sailing and then loot them.

My goodness

I haven't read this post in awhile. You guys got a bit out of hand. A sailor would probably not follow Umberlee. He would pray to either her or Selune. If he follower Valkur he would be taking a risk, because he is not that powerful and Umberlee hates him. Now, a pirate would follow Umberlee. Followers of Umberlee try to increase fear on the sea. How would a sailor do that? Why would Umberlee take a sailor as a follower? That would be like a sheepherd empowering a sheep.

But, what I say is...

Followers of Umberlee should get create food, but they should only be able to create vitaman C sources to fight scrvy.

Umerlee's titles, what can be said and what not?

Post by Granel » Sat Jan 17, 2004 4:15 am

There are many names for Umberlee one of them is in Faiths and Pantheons is in the RL world almost a swear word or a full swear word. I have not said it yet out of careful thinking but can we use that title? I'm not even sure why she has it! That is of course unless she wanted it in the first place. I don't want to post it here because this board has the same pg rating as the mud and I'm not sure if it is allowed to be used either here or in the game. So I won't so that I don't cause any trouble, other than that I'm fine.
Thanks.

Of course, now that Umberlee will be in the game you might want to be careful about using that particular title anyway.

Does Umberlee accept that title or is it likely to incur her wrath if used in talking or in prayers?

Methinks, given that she is venerated more out of fear than respect, it's the sort of thing people call her when they think she's not listening. IIRC one of my old chars referred to her by that title in front of Micheal and he told him off.
