Food decay

Post by Enig » Wed Aug 06, 2008 1:03 am

This isn't exactly a syntax thing, more of a question about regulation, so I figured it deserved its own topic.

I've read in the lesson files that fresh food should only last about six hours or so but in the MUD itself it's been my experience that this is only very rarely adhered to, which seems understandable since it can be pretty weird in an RP scene when the dinner you're eating is suddenly stolen by maggots :o

Anyways, I'm just hoping to get a quick bit of clarification here, and thanks in advance!

Actually, per last discussion between Christophe and I, we honestly don't care if the food sold at shops decays at all or not. The code for decaying food as it is, and the ratio of game time vs. real time doesn't really lend itself, IMO, to practical purchase and storage of food. And the poison and echoes that result from the decay are a little too tasteless in my personal opinion. In other words, a little too much realism intruding itself upon the fun of the game.

You can set the decay timers to 0, and they will not rot at all. So long as they're paid for, and not free food sources, I see no problem in making them perpetual.

I'd love to only see magically created food rot away or food specificly coded to because of ic type...like ice cream

I am not one of the head builders.. Not even CLOSE... BUT... I hate hate hate when planning an event with people and gathering IC food which is meant to be fresh when people arrive.. rots before they even arrives. Some of the best elven food in Tangled Trees rots before you can even finish rping eating it.

Thank you for reminding me of that. I held off changing it because I thought that we were going to code out the rotting at one point. Since we haven't, I'll 0 out all the food in Tangled Trees when I can.

And yes, I could see having food sac timers for things like ice cream, very IC, except we need to change the way it decays, because things like ice cream and candyfloss melt or dissolve, they don't putrify and become maggot food :P
