It would be nice if everyone did share his thoughts to make this class more interesting to PLAY.
Although I wouldn't like to force anyone into a cliché, mostly what thieves can offer to a party that no other class can/should be able to match is the ability to disarm traps and scout (sorry rangers but the ultimate stealth character is/should be a rogue)
In my opinion traps work right, there are traps of different types and the thief can spot them and disarm them.
But sure stealth could use some rework, the fact that there are spells that automatically detect thieves that shouldn't do it as several items that automatically detect hidden characters make almost impossible spying on others pcs.
What I propose is changing the affect detect hidden and those spells which detect the hidden so they only show hidden items and adding the skill spot which would be only be given to those classes that have it in D&D, so if a wizard/cleric wants to be sure that there isn't someone hidden he will seek privacy with his partners or will hire someone who can detect the hidden either way is much better that just casting a spell, still there would be some spells to detect hidden characters but those would reveal those characters hidden in a single instant (Faerie Fire) or seeking a particular character (Magic mirror, no matter if he is hiding or not) but spellcasters no longer would have buffs with time duration to detect hidden characters.
This combined with the skill snoop as commented in:
http://www.gallwey.com/fk/board/viewtop ... ilit=snoop would make them a competent class and very interesting to play.

The others (Take two: thieves)
Re: The others (Take two: thieves)
First I would strongly suggest the word thieves be changed to rouges... One IMM back when said he hated thieves but liked rouges... and it sounds more appealing to have a rogue in your group then a thief.
And I do not believe the spell "detect hidden" detects characters anymore, only hidden passageways and objects and creatures.
But I do agree with you, if you are a rogue and want to do a bit of spying, you can't with a priest in the room. Only way is if a wizard did it. With inviz and nondetection, both don't last long but i see no other way
