Hidden as an affect

Post by Brodnur » Fri Oct 03, 2008 2:59 am

This isn't a new skill, trade, feat... etc, etc, more of a modification to an existing option. I have noticed that when a character is invisible, for instance, it shows as an affect, same with many other spells and skills. Would it be feasible to code the "hide" skill to do the same, once a character has become hidden? I know it is somewhat dependant on the user's deftness in the skill, as well as other characters making or failing the saving throw, so I am not sure if that is the reason for it not showing up on the affects bar at the top of the screen. IC, a character might not always know the moment they are "discovered", as the ones doing the discovering may not give it away the instant they are revealed.

Once upon a time, hide was shown on the affects list. Cannot remember the reasoning for removing it off the top of my head. But there was a lengthy discussion about it somewhere... if I remember right.

You do not need to change the world, merely leave it a little better than how you found it.

The reason was, unless I am mistaken, that logically you cannot know if you are hiding. You can *think* you're hiding, but you can never know.

It is the perfect justification for not including hide in the list of affects. There are several skills and abilities that do not enter this list, simply because of the nature of skills and chances. I'd rather it did not change and indications of it failing were maintained by player observation.
May you find the knowledge you seek. If you find something else, it is still knowledge, and as such, still a gain.

Mind that there isn't spot skill meaning that the only way to "spot" hidden characters is through magic, is for that that some of the spells that are not meant to detect hidden characters in D&D/FR do it in FK.

Ok, I can see the logic in that decision. Thanks lots for explaining it. :D

I though, don't. As I have said before, I think that is a fairly weak reason for not having hide in the affects list for one reason:

You always will know if you are TRYING to hide.

Just because you don't know if it is working very well, a character will at least know if they are still trying to hide behind that box in the corner. How you find out if it is working or not would depend on others rp. The same that if you are revealed to a caster by a spell or a skill, the affect would still be there until you vis or are interacted with in a physical way, such as combat.
Glim asks Gwain 'Can I be on the watch?!?'
Gwain raises an eyebrow.
