When selecting a name..

Post by Selveem » Sat Oct 18, 2008 1:44 pm

Today, I logged in and my new Dwarf received this message:

The name Aare has been found unacceptable. Use the name command
to change your name.
Your name does not fit the race and class you have selected.

Aside from not understanding why the name is unacceptable, I have never heard of a name having to fit... your class...

Has anyone else seen this before and could they explain how that is assessed?

I think that's just a default message. Certainly when I "check" names, I don't think about class. I don't think any of the other "name-checkers" do, either.

I've
seen it before. :)

Imms and members of Player Council's upper ranks are the ones who approve/deny names. When we deny authorization for a name we have two choices: 1.) deny without providing a reason, 2.)deny and provide a predetermined, coded reason. For instance, if we deny for reason "similar," players would receive the message that their name is too similar to that of another player or mob. The one to which you refer is, I THINK, "race." While it apparently does contain language reference inappropriateness for the class, it is usually the race that is referenced.

On a side note, imms and Player Council members have a general policy not to provide specifics beyond those coded responses regarding why any given name might have been denied. It is not an enforced policy and individuals are allowed to provide more specific answers if they choose. My personal policy for answering the question "What's wrong with my name?!?" [which I recognize is not your question here] is that if it is a fairly new player I will try to provide more detail. If it is one who has been around long enough to understand the system, I usually don't provide any detail beyond the coded response, if even that.

Answer to an unasked question: I wasn't the one who handled the case of Aare.

Oh, I don't care about that.

I appreciate that you recognized I wasn't asking why my name wasn't approved. I can come up with many, many names. :P

Is it possible to have that coded reason changed, though, to remove 'class?' A name based on class makes no sense at all. A class is what you do.

Thanks again for the help!
