Food of the Realms

Post by Lathlain » Sat Jul 18, 2009 5:50 pm

I have a dream. A dream to see the taverns, inns, restaurants and seedy street peddlars of the realms providing nourishment in forms other than iron rations and meat-surprise stew!

So here's the deal:

I'm creating a largely food-centric area. I don't particularly want scripts and fancy happenings, but I -do- want ideas for food, restaurants, vendors and relevant accessories. Colourised names and descriptions for any of these are all welcome in whatever form they take, but I'm aiming for 100 items in total so feel free to go quite mad!

I will also accept suggestions on places where additional food is needed.

To get the ball rolling, here goes -

Item: {70}a piece of wrapping cloth
Desc: {70}A square of folded linen that can be used to wrap meats and pastries, protecting them from the ravages of the elements.
Note: A cheap, small container for one or two pieces of food to be kept in.

Item: {20}a {70}c{F0}h{70}e{F0}e{70}s{F0}e{70}-{F0}f{70}i{F0}l{70}l{F0}e{70}d {20}avocado
Desc: {20}An avocado half that has been stoned and stuffed with a {70}mixed cheese filling{20}.

NPC: {80}a scruffy, unshaven peddlar
Desc: {80}Dressed in {30}a well-loved three-quarter length coat{80} that has seen better days, and sporting a thick stubble of unguessable age, this man exudes an air of charm slimy enough to fry an egg in. His smile is far too large for his well-rounded face and his eyes are a remarkably lifeless tone of grey.

Any and all suggestions are gratefully received, so thank you all in advance!

cookies.

NPC: {D0}an alluring, sweet vendor
Desc: {D0}This attractive womans hair has been pulled back out of her face, but a few

friendly smile, gladly, he shows off his fruit assortment.

I've still got room for some more delectible dishes and tidbits, folks - and we'll still need a whole army of lucky NPCs to sell it all when it's done! A few rooms/lodges/inns and back alleys to sell them in would be superb too, if anyone's feeling up to it.

Keep up the good work

Room: {50}The Harlot's Hovel
Description: {30}This tavern is very obviously poorly maintained, the wooden walls displaying an abundance of cracks and, in some places, even small holes. The constant, low buzz of murmuring mouths, interrupted only by sporadic bursts of cacophonous noise, is almost comforting in its rhythmic consistency. The atmosphere is filled with a combination of smells, ranging from the roasted meats in the kitchen to the baked pastries on display at the bar, a long thing of wood and poor craftsmanship. Generous warmth spills into the room from a fire that burns low in the eastern wall of the building, its only bounds a stone fireplace in much need of a cleaning. At each table there are four low benches, most of them held up by a combination of legs, remains of legs, and unused works of literature, as are a number of the tables. Dilapidated wooden stairs lead upward, and the only door aside from that to the kitchen is the one leading outside, to the <direction>

Not food items but.. How about a series of plates, that are containers to hold food? I always find myself wanting to set out food for people and this could help with just setting it on the ground. Put the food on plates and hand them out! Could eat off of plates rather than off of the ground.

Short {F0}Fine china plate decorated with {D0}floral patterns
Long {F0}a fragile plate lies on the ground here
Desc {F0}This plate is made of the finest china and has been decorated with delicate, intricate {D0}floral designs {F0}around the rim. It looks like it could hold a fair amount of food.

Short {30}a large, round wooden platter
Long {30}a wooden platter lies here
Desc {30}This large wooden platter could be used to serve, or to present food.

Short {F0}an etched {70}s{F0}i{70}l{F0}v{70}e{F0}r plate
Long {F0}a fine silver plate lies here
Desc {F0}This plate is made of the finest silver and has been polished until it shines. Intricate designs have been etched into the metal around the rim.

Short {70}a haughty chef
Long {70}a -whatever you want him to be doing
Desc {70}A master chef, this man holds an air of haughtiness as he moves about. His gaze seems to just dare you to insult his food. His round face is constantly red from yelling at his inept assistants. His black hair is parted in the middle and slicked down against his scalp. A thin, tiny little mustache sits under his nose.

I'm going to have a lot of downtime this week, so I'll try to come up with more peoples and places

I especially like the idea of plates and bowls as small containers. I'm sure we can work some of them in!

So! Thanks a lot to everyone for your help and inspiration so far! A spree of frantic creation last night saw me fill the area with 98 items of food, drink, containers and a handful of vendors to sell them. I'm afraid this means I don't need any more items for the time being, though hang on to any leftover ideas you have - I'm sure future projects will arise soon enough

After some consideration I'm afraid I've decided not to include any new rooms or areas for now (largely due to the fiddly nature of updating all of the related areas etc), though I -do- still need between ten and fifteen more vendors to place strategically around the world. If anyone can come up with anything, I'd be thrilled to include your work in the project!

Short {70}a squinting, kerchiefed vendor
Long {70}a squinting vendor wearing a kerchief on her head eyes you here.
Desc {70} This woman has a turned-up, freckly nose, red hair peeking out from under a kerchief,
and a continually suspicious squint. She watches all the passers-by like a hawk.

Short {70}a young girl with a tray
Long {70}a young girl with a tray offers up her tray to you hopefully.
Desc {70} This young half-elven girl has long, if dirty, blonde hair and bare feet.
She wears the rough and tattered clothing of a street urchin. Leather straps help her
bear the heavy weight of the large tray she carries to hold her wares.

Short {70}a thickset baker's boy
Long {70}a thickset baker's boy is here selling his master's wares.
Desc {70} This baker's boy is thickset and muscular, with unsightly bulges of flesh
spilling out and dimpled knuckles. He has small, dark eyes and a slightly
unpleasant, knowing grin.

Short {70}a twinkly-eyed halfling lass
Long {70} twinkly-eyed halfling lass offers her wares here.
Desc {70} This young halfling lass is very pretty, with green eyes, blonde
hair and extremely adorable dimples. She offers her wares with a cheeky grin
and walks about on bare feet.

May I add a suggestion for some sort of fruit cart?

Short {70}a swarthy, gap-toothed codger
Long {70}a swarthy, gap-toothed codger smiles crookedly up at you from his wares
Desc {70} A balding and stringy old gaffer, with sun-swarthed skin and a fractured smile (more gaps than teeth), beckons you over. Arrayed on the blanket before him is an assortment of wares, both desirable and undesirable.

Short {70}the merry organ-grinder, and his monkey
Long {70}the merry organ-grinder plays music here, with his little dancing friend
Desc {70} Given the general vacant gaze and slack jawed expression of the grinder as he plays away on his organ happily.. one might conclude the monkey dancing on his shoulder is the one actually running the operation. A variety of veritable goods dangles lazily, for sale, off the grinder's organ.

Short {70}a mad trapper
Long {70}a mad trapper sells fresh meat here with her jaunty, little fox-tail-cap askew
Desc {70} She is burly and getting on in years, but still with a quick wit and mad eye, off set by a jaunty cap of fox-skin, half falling off her brow. Carried in her hefty arms is an odd assortments of traps, from which she is selling -very- fresh meat dishes.

Short {70}the mute bard
Long {70}the mute bard hawks his wares with flamboyant pantomimes
Desc {70} A young and charming fellow, save for the garish scar around his neck, perhaps someone didn't like his singing? Now he performs for you with grandly exaggerated hands gestures and florid pantomimes, trying to get you to buy his wears.
((On this one perhaps replace any standard talking responses with gestures like: the mute bard gestures to indicate that he doesn't trade with folks he cant see. etc.))

Short {70}a totemic fishmonger
Long {70}a totemic fishmonger stands here sternly, scowling at the world, lamenting a lack of customers
Desc {70}a towering man stands here scwoling, with arms as thick around as his thighs from years of hauling rope and cleaving the heads off fish. His bared arms are covered in a rich mosaic of totemic tattoos, and his hard eyes watch you displeasingly, perhaps you should buy from him so he stops scowling at you?

Short {70}a rare Thayan vendor
Long {70}a rare Thayan vendor stands here cloaked in scarlet, shrouded in street shadows
Desc {70}an envoy from one of the Thayan merchant enclaves, magic and mystery are not the only things to be carried out of the far east, this enigmatic young lady exports fine food to you as well. Robed in deep scarlet, and with piercing dark eyes, she sells her fare here discretely.

Short {70}a doll-like serving girl
Long {70}a doll-like serving girl sings and dances here swathed in many bright colours
Desc {70}Haling from the deeps of Calimshan, she dances exotically, using her sultry songs and colourful (if not so conservative) garments to lure in prospective customers, then promptly turning their attention to the host of fine goods on the back of a gaily painted wagon.

Short {70}a dull-eyed half-ogress merchant
Long {70}a dull-eyed half-ogress hunkers here, half slumped before a pile of unidentifiables
Desc {70}Massive, with a mottled grey hide, and empty eyes, she gnaws lazily on a hunk of meat. This hulking yet listless seeming half-ogress merchant doesn't even bother to try and sell you anything as you go past, perhaps you should prod her with a pointy stick like the other guy did just a moment ago.. hey wait, where is that other guy anyway?

Short {70}Thanes, the manservant
Long {70}Thanes, the manservant stands here richly dressed, only a smart sales sign hints he is a merchant
Desc {70}Looking rather dapper in a richly tailored suit, Thanes, as his sales sign indicates, is here offering you a variety of respectable yet edible curios on behalf of his employer. His tiny little mustache wiggles a bit under his nose as you draw closer.
Follow your heart, yes.. but use your head, too. Take to every task with zeal and passion, but try to pair it with sage and discerning execution.

My thanks again to everyone who had a part in this.

I'm pleased to announce that, as of this evening, the realms are partially fuller of fine, and occasionally curious foodstuffs. I challenge you to find all 100!

This has been a fun little project. I look forward to more in the near future!
