Slice - Quantity and quality of leather

Post by Brar » Fri Oct 08, 2010 3:38 pm

With the introduction of quality for leather, it is very very hard to make a simple piece of armor without slaughtering an entire forest at least twice.

I can see 2 possibles change for that:

Change 1:
Introduce a "lower quality" command, that would allow to use a leather for a lower quality one. (if you do that with a low quality you get an inferior, ect). No reversal possible of course, once you lower it then it's lower.

Change 2:
Gives multiple skins based on size of the corpse you are slicing.
Instead of having multiple tries, only gives one try but it would give you several meat/skin depending on the size of the corpse.

I would say, considering today's rate of leather for armourmaking: 5 for a large, 3 for a medium corpse, 2 for a small, one for a tiny.

And rename "skin" to "patch of skin" instead, considering that it will have a standard size instead of being the entire skin of the animal (how come you need as much snake hide than wolf hide to make a chestpiece? )

This is 2 small idea that I think can save leatherworking and save several animal species.

We have already asked for a re-skin command, similar to re-smelting, to help with skin/hide quality issue. I think it is lost in the 'to-discuss' pile awaiting attention.

I would like to see more critters give hides/skins based on their size. Small and Large should not give the same amounts.

You do not need to change the world, merely leave it a little better than how you found it.

Updating this a bit with some todays fact.

Here is my skill level:
Slicing Journeyman
Tanning Amateur

I wanted to make a padded headgear.
I had to kill 103 hairy dire boar to be able to make it....

Considering the failing rate of slicing, the failing rate of tanning and the need to have exact same quality of leather, it is a chore to do anything.

I think the problem comes from the fact that there is no "endless supply" of material like for metal armour and mining.

I think we should simply lower the number of leather required for each construct command.

What would be reasonable I think and comparable in gathering time than mining would be.

Head, glove, belt - 1 tanned skin
Arms, legs, feet - 2 tanned skin
Body - 3 tanned skins

Also a big addition would be to be able to gather more than one skin from a mob, it would simply be a big relief in terms of time waiting for the entire forest to repop.
And would lessen the need to eradicate one entire species in order to make a head piece.
