[SPELL] Cantrips

Post by Rhangalas » Tue May 10, 2011 2:50 am

Kudos on the cantrips update. I was hoping something like this would eventually come around. Just thought I'd open a thread on suggestions for other cantrips that might have enough merit to be added and also to suggest a bit more inclusion of the other spheres (at least a spell per sphere), because at the moment the majority of them are evocations, which makes other specialists unable to use their bonuses.

My PC is a Conjurer, so I'll start it off by throwing out a cantrip that is not only a conjuration, but also would be of use to a fledgling wizard:

Acid Splash
Conjuration (Creation) [Acid]
Range: Ranged Touch
Target: Offensive

You fire a small orb of acid at the target causing minor(1d3 points of acid damage) acidic burns upon a successful ranged touch attack.

Notes:
Level: Sor/Wiz 0
Components: Verbal, Somatic
Effect: One missile of acid
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No

I was looking through a 3.5e cantrips listing and checking out which ones have been added so far (thanks for acid splash by the way) and noticed that there's nothing that useful or code-able for an illusionist. Ghost Sound would only be useful as an RP tool unless mobs were set with mprogs to react to it in some way. I came up with a homebrew cantrip of my own that might help out a little bit, it's kind of like semi-invisibility or the exact opposite of faerie fire.

Camouflage or Chameleon (or what ever's clever)

Illusion (Glamer)
Range: Close
Target: Defensive

You partially blend into your surroundings making yourself harder to hit.

Notes:
Level: Sor/Wiz 0 (Could also give it to bards and rangers if you wanted).
Components: Verbal, Somatic, Material (a pinch of soot)

Chameleon and Camouflage are already in D&D, though.

Additionally, the affect is sounding a bit like blur which is a level 2 spell. Not really sure I agree with that one.

Create Food is a level 3 spell. Maybe it could be moved down to level 0 with Create Water?

Yeah, I know. I tried to edit to include that it was kind of like blur, but the site wouldn't let me. I guess it is some sort of protection against multiple posts/spam-posting. Anyways, Ghost Sound is the only 3.5e cantrip for the illusion sphere. I wouldn't mind it and would probably use it myself to enhance my RP, but it wouldn't be that useful for a beginning wizard. Other than that, I was focusing on giving the illusionists something to fill the bonus slot with. You could move ventriloquism to level 0, but ventriloquism is kind of like an improved ghost sound, ghost sound can't mimic speech.

Just name it something that doesn't already exist, give it the same effects as Blur, but lowered to the standards of a cantrip. Maybe concealment (5% miss chance) and detect invis is able to see through it.

PCs innately have a 5% miss chance no matter their level. What you're proposing is really a 10% miss chance if you see it as a 5% increase. I think that's a bit much for a level 0 spell, that's all. If you want to make up an illusion spell, I think it shouldn't be something so significant like that. That's all. Especially when you start throwing other low level spells in like mirror image, shield, armor and the like.
