If it can be done, I'd be for this idea. Because its fair and balanced.
Justice is not neccesarily honourable, it is a tolerable business, in essence you tolerate honour until it impedes justice, then you do what is right.

Lathander: I disagree with your idea because it is out-of-character. I think that a "hot" flag might work if it prevented a PC thief from quitting within a certain span of time (say five minutes after the theft - Mask's idea), but I don't agree with limiting sale of items that way.

I think that I show my libertarian streak here. I prefer to just give people guidelines and trust them to stay within them. We have had one incident and, really, it worked out fine in the end. It's not as if there is an epidemic of discourteously played thefts. I don't see a justification to become draconian on something like thievery.

I kinda like the idea that Lathander came up with, but ultimately it is up to the thief to work with the PC's OOC as well as IC. If you steal an item, and want to sell it you most certainly can to another player but they can also give a chance to retrieve that item IC. This means that people need to not use their OOC knowledge against the player of the Thief. Thieves are thieves after all, and if they are going to get anything from stealing then they have to work within their means to contact the owner and extort them for all that they can. If you steal an item, you best be prepared to stick around for another 30 to 60 min. to roleplay simple as that.

Provided the player of the thief is mature enough to actually play as he's supposed to, I don't think this thread would have ever needed to be created.

I'm with Harroghty in that I don't like to see a lot of restrictions due to one-offs.

But, ultimately, we do need a proper way to handle a situation like this where a player thinks they're clever. I think these sort of issues will become far less common as soon as Spot is placed in-game. Lathander's suggestion is a fine one to restrict some of the abuses a thief can utilize, but it's not as if an immature thief can't simply utilize other options to grief their marks.

I also think that, should you fail your pickpocket (due to your own skill or due to spot), the target should have the ability to config to attack the pickpocket automatically; I would certainly have that option toggled on most of my characters.

I really, really like that idea Lathander. I think that another feature should be introduced though--until the timer runs out, or maybe branched off entirely, the thief should be able to retrieve the item. I think this would allow the thief to return and get the item if it's not something he just wants to sell, or if he gets caught and wants to give the item back in a trade for his freedom, etc.

This gives the thief both a viable holding option instead of just encouraging stealing/selling from players and a workable angle for escape if he does happen to get caught, that he may or may not take.
Jamais arriere.
