Lowering the power of Bash

Post by Llanthyr » Fri Jul 01, 2011 12:29 am

Currently, if you get bashed by a mob, you're almost set up for an insta-kill, sort of like how mobs used to insta-kill with phantasmal killer or disintegrate.

Code: Select all

Anastacia is uninjured as a Frost giant bashes into her!

A Frost giant's bash leaves Anastacia stunned!

A Frost giant's pierce nearly bisects Anastacia's left leg.

Anastacia's severed left leg falls to the ground!

Your slash tears open a Frost giant's abdomen.

a Frost giant has several minor wounds.

A Frost giant's pierce tears a gaping wound into Anastacia's chest.

A Frost giant's pierce nearly bisects Anastacia's abdomen.

Your slash tears a gaping wound into a Frost giant's left arm.

a Frost giant is covered in cuts and bruises.

A Frost giant's pierce tears a gaping wound into Anastacia's chest.

A Frost giant ducks under your slashing attack.

A Frost giant's pierce minces Anastacia's abdomen.

Anastacia is DEAD!

You hear Anastacia's death cry.
This is from 100% to 0%, in less time than I can possibly react (around 2s). I'm not sure how the code is made to work with someone being bashed down, but this is an insanely fast way to die. The said character has spells up to increase HP, AC, and even stone skin on. If this is an intended function, is it possible to reduce the amount of damage done when a character is stunned?

Yeah, it was about that quick, too. Went from Bashed to Dead in a VERY short time. It was a bit surprising at the moment it happened, and we'd been doing just fine up until that point. So... Less squishy? :D

Bash is already weak as hell when a player uses it; most of the time it misses and even when it hits, a PC doesn't do enough damage alone to finish even a wizard before it departs. Perhaps just limiting the number of mobs that have it?

It's not a matter of limiting the number of mobs that have it. This is quite an inbalance when you have an AC of 30, damage reduction, and die in less than 2 seconds when bashed. On the same note, this isn't about solo-ing either, since we were grouped up when that happened. There was just no time for reaction at all, considering the feedback lag, thinking time, typing time, and input time lag.

I have long taken it as granted that bash by giant = instagib. Between my characters I have died to that particular incident probably no less than 10 times.

IF Bash hits and the mob that bashed you is actually strong, there is a chance you'll die.

IF Finger of Death hits, there's a chance you'll die. In fact, spells have an even lower survival rate.

I don't see the point.

I don't find BASH to be overpowered, at least not of late - if anything, the opposite - it is a waste of effort. Perhaps it is more of a danger for targets with low CON or fortitude saves, but in combat between my testport warrior and these frost giants, they stunned him twice in about 40 tries, and each time for not more than two rounds.

I'm not certain about the game mechanics of what happens when you get bashed. However, playing a cleric with fairly high constitution (not including in stat boosts, AC boosts, and damage reduction spells), it seemed fairly ridiculous at that time.

I do not mind having bash triggering more - I think it should. It was what happened when bash got triggered that prompted me to start this post.

I'm not sure it is the bash that got you here - looks like you were attacking again in no time. Is there a longer-lived penalty, after you resume counterattacks?

Usually these giants fight with their fists - I'm guessing what made this one so deadly was that it was armed. I think that happens following a copyover, which is rare but does occur from time to time.

Sorry for the lateness of my reply, I meant to post in this thread a while ago!

After this initially went up we took a look at bash and discovered there was a bug that was causing the bashee to get hit for 2x as much damage as they were supposed to, which is now fixed, so, it shouldn't be quite as lethal now as it has been in the past.

Cool. Can we make it hit more often, now, like it's supposed to?
