Coding to have an object work as an amulet of communication
Coding to have an object work as an amulet of communication
Is there a way to code an object with existing programs in it to also work as an amulet of communication?

Those are all i45 and I believe that only i45 works as an amulet. The way that the caravans, for example, get around that is that they rename i45 when you enter. You could make an i45 look different, but you could not easily add programs or anything else to it.

Actually I know of at least one other object that acts as an amulet of communication (a staff you get from a quest, i4552), or at least it used to act as an amulet... I know that I could send tells while holding it, however examining it I see nothing suggesting it could send tells. Perhaps because it starts with the same vnum, 45? Could all i45x objects be amulets?

No, that would be every object in silverymoon.are. It's a question, I think, that we will have to pose to Mask.

Perhaps a bit out of the range of suggestions I should be posing as a non-builder, but converting the code from an object specific format into one utilized by an object_flag would be awesome. Get rid of the need for renames and allow complete control of amulet abilities to be in the hands of builders.

There used to be a bug along these lines, in that many objects not intended to work as amulets did so. It's been fixed, though, so things should now be as Drew describes.Solaghar wrote:Actually I know of at least one other object that acts as an amulet of communication (a staff you get from a quest, i4552), or at least it used to act as an amulet... Do we WANT items to act as amulets of communication and also have programs?

Yes, yes we do. But it depends on our definition of want, amulets of communication are items specificly made for communication, it is an indispensible item but it does take up room. It can only be worn all layers and can only be used for communicated purposes. Having an amulet that can do several things or offer bonuses much like other magical devices would free up a bit of space on a character's equipment. But it can go either way, people will never stop wearing amulets or owning them because of inconvience, they're are a lot of layers and locations available for other things. But I don't see the harm or worry associated with coding an amulet of communications properties onto other items.
Unless of course, the code is unchangeable or hard code.

You're making my point.
By keeping it the way it is, PCs have to make more choices.

But is it a choice that adds anything? To me, that just seems like an annoyance tacked on to a generally necessary facet of the game.

My goal would be to see if it were possible to code it currently as a builder, not to really advocate it as a need or right.Lathander wrote:You're making my point.

The only object that is recognised as an amulet of communication is an amulet of communication. It is not possible to code another object to act as amulet of communication.
