It also happened in Border forest, with Centaurs assisting aggressive giant spiders, against a druid of Mielikki ...

Definitly something wrong with the assist/noassist code.

I think we all agree the hard code around this is broken, but in order for me to file a meaningful bug report on it I need to be able to reproduce it, or at least provide a catalog of situations in which it occurs. It doesn't always happen. If anyone else experiences this, please chime in (ideally with a log, optimally with a LOOK somewhere in there, which you can PM to me if you prefer), just like Selveem did about the Drow in Alaron. If anyone sees a pattern, please say so! For example, this may only happen when ranged AOE spells are sent in that direction before combat is initiated, or somesuch. Without some clue along those lines, Mask could spend hours on this and not find the problem. That's our job to come up with!

See? The Halfling guard was there prior to the bull attacking me, so as the one being attacked he should have assisted me. Now then, after fleeing I tried to leave the village as swiftly as possible, but the guards caught up with me. He said he was confiscating my gold toe ring etched with elven designs, cheap item, no big deal, but he also took my gold ring with a pink gem that was enchanted to be my glowing item. I had it the whole time I was looking around, but after that guard took my toe ring it was just gone.

So, apparently the soldiers in Alaron also assist the Drow on the far eastern side.. My Centaur has 2 crimes now of assault because I managed to stun him before we killed him.. and he attacked again after he regained consciousness..

To make matters worse, I can't even turn myself in. I have myself set to surrender, but no one arrests him to clear the 'crimes.' :/

Thus far I have reports of both true neutral and CG mobs doing this. No other alignments reported thus far. I have found one mob (the halfling guard) for which I can reliably get him to side with an offensive opponent, not flagged citizen. So, I'm putting in a high-priority bug (955) to address at least that.

Thanks for the additional reports.

Lost my log somewhere, but my mage (CG) was attacked by the assistant in the Magical Post (the one that sells boxes and letters) for attacking a rat with magic missiles.

Any chance, when this is fixed, that some characters can app (or even better, just PM someone) with things that attacked _them_ and now are in trouble for it? For instance, Kiert was attacked by a soldier of Alaron (he came to the aid of a Drow...?) who he managed to only stun. He then became a 'criminal' in Alaron. As if that weren't bad enough, someone decided to unleash a bunch of Drow into the place where Dwarves are. Lots. Five in just a single room. I wasn't aware because I had to make a quick store run. When I logged back on and went west, I found all of them waiting for me. I retreated west as five Drow casting Vampiric Touch all in the same round would have rendered me unable to cast. Fleeing west there was only two. Well, apparently a Dwarf thought the Drow needed help (?!) and attacked me. I didn't notice as I was already in the middle of killing one Drow and I dropped the Dwarf like a sack of bricks (for clarity: killed too fast; I couldn't killmode stun). Now I'm a 'murderer of Dwarves.'

It'd be really nice if this bug could be given a higher priority. :/

I just saw a question 'ask' regarding a similar issue.

He was a LN player that attacked a rat in a city. The citizen came to the rat's assistance and attacked the player. Now, the player has jail time in-game.

This is something that shouldn't be happening and could be a big detriment to new players as well as current players, as Selveem described.

As a simple fix (since this has been such a persistent problem) why don't we just disable the assist code until a solution is reached? Better to have less realistic mobs for the short-term, than to lose new players and frustrate the old.

This could be tied into the assisting bug or not, it may not. None the same, guards have now decided after a long time that they want to help the bull in Hillvale after it comes after you unprovoked. Once again, we're dealing with a CG Half Elf Bard. And reference the guards deciding to help, we both had items confiscated from us. Oh, and this is going to be a long brutal log sorry ahead of time.

Bolded the items of being in the room not engaged with the bull, point where the guards removed the items, and as well the items on my person that was taken in my first check of equipment. The helm, easy to replace but the other is a quest reward and is not so.

Re: Elves assisting Drow in Alaron?

This halfling guard helping the bull is the one reliable, reproducible example I've been able to find. I've got it in as a priority 1 bug report, and I hardly ever put those in. Mask is really, really under the gun at work, though, and he hasn't been able to address anything, even P1 bug reports. He'll do so as soon as he can. Until then, I don't think we need more examples.

If you find yourself on the wrong side of the law, or have a quest break on you, because of this problem, please sit on it until the underlying code is fixed. Then someone (me if not anyone else) will try to work through them and remedy the most serious problems.

Who is on the normal (ie european) side of the world and is up to go with me abduct Mask from his workplace and keeps him in a damp underground cave until he resolves it? Departure tonight 7pm GMT from Brussels

Any chance, since Mask is currently not able to take care of it, that we can get the reported mobs purge of their assist flags? Please?

I'm wandering around and getting attacked by bandits and then I see harper mages trying to assist. I know they cast some pretty crazy spells (especially Enervation, which has no saving throw, doesn't always heal properly with reregenerate, and even still, regenerate is a very costly spell.

I know this is probably asking a lot, but it really is such a huge issue that I think it deserves that attention. I'm willing to go through and do it myself, but I still don't have a builder yet.

In the sewers in Tantras

Cirei looks at a ragged young woman.
A snake slithers in from the west.
A snake lunges at you from out of nowhere!
You step back out of the range of a snake's jaws.
You step back out of the range of a snake's jaws.
A ragged young woman joins the battle!
You attack a ragged young woman as he gets within your weapon's reach.
You realise a snake is close to dying and pull your blow.
Your slash nearly bisects a snake's head.
A snake is stunned, but will probably recover.
A ragged young woman punches your left arm.
Cirei joins the battle!
Cirei goes to strike a snake then stops.
Your punch viciously hammers a shark's abdomen.
A shark is stunned, but will probably recover.

Some significant changes in the code that controls NPC reactions in cases like these were made a while ago. Hopefully, those changes fixed the most egregious examples of this, but there are likely still some "edge cases" where something outlandish happens. I am testing, but your input here would be appreciated again: if you encounter a situation in which you are attacked by NPC it seems you should not be (from this point forward), please report it here. Finding another reliable problem case (like the bull and the guard, above) will be key to ironing out any remaining problems.

Thanks!

As to the question of reparations for problems caused by this bug-they are difficult to fix. They require someone with the power to change qbits find you online, and know the very cryptic combination of numbers needed to fix just your problem. Wiping out all your quest bits in a certain area is relatively easy; changing your bits to account for one specific problem, when you have done other quests in the area involves some challenging multi-base math. That said, if something caused by this bug is really messing with you, please PM me and I'll see what I can do. My time will be very limited until this summer, but come summer I'll try to catch up with requests.
