[COMMAND] find
I don't really agree with putting it in. I actually had this option in my mud and took it out because it is too open to abuse. It is easy enough to find rp without this command.
Two of my characters can't enter waterdeep, where many people go to find rp but they find plenty of rp and meet new people just by walking along the road or going to other more neutral cities.
Even if you have an option to turn it off for your character a person can use the command and type who, see a count of who are in area's and realize hey one or two are missing. Evils on the who list, lets go see what they are up to, or cast a spell they otherwise wouldn't to see what's going on.
There are many ways this can be abused. The point Moloch made is a good one. There's two people in shilmista lets go see who is killing elves. Or Tethyr etc....
Even if it's for the keep say this good person is there for a reason, someone types this command and see's one person in the keep, so they go there in good nature to rp. Find this goodly person who they otherwise wouldn't have found because they wouldn't have gone there.

in addition to toggling privacy, a player can also toggle indication that he is inclined to roleplay!

edit: those who disagree with this seem to believe that RP must originate from an IC and "natural source." Are not a large portion of roleplays established OOC (MSN: hey I'm on wanna go talk for a bit?) What about imm-run events?

I apologize for repeating myself, but I present myself as a case in point. Rarely do I have time that I really get to concentrate on FK 100%.
Often, I play for a half-hour here, a half hour there, between brushing my teeth or making dinner or what not. I wouldn't want to "lure" someone to Silverymoon only have me log out just as they arrive, or worse, have to say "Sorry, I have to go" as soon as they make IC contact with my PC.
I'm not saying there aren't BAD reasons for wanting to flag yourself as not ready to RP, but there are GOOD reasons, I think, for wanting to warn off people from seeking you out.

I find AFK works just as well when you are away from the mud screen or busy with other ventures. It alerts other players you are not there, not looking at the screen or such. I am sure it could be applied to not yet being ready to rp as people who are afk are generally left alone until they get back.
Nothing wrong though with suggesting new ideas.
Code: Select all
Syntax: afk (abbreviation for "away from keyboard")
The 'afk' command will place an [AFK] flag beside your name on the who
list when activated, as well as informing those who send tells that you
you are afk. It can be toggled on or off by typing afk, and will also
go off automatically when you enter any command.
May you find the knowledge you seek. If you find something else, it is still knowledge, and as such, still a gain.
Also, as someone who often has to log off, I'd have to admit I have never once thought I was being rude by having to log off quick. I understand your point, Raona, but if you're on for only half an hour, and a character happens to find you, then that's that. And the player behind the other character really won't mind (or shouldn't) if someone has to go.
Half an hour of interaction is always better than half an hour of non-interaction.

If you have knowledge, let others light their candles with it.

Again, I believe the discussion is to only give you a list of cities and towns that have people in them, with the number of people. There IS no giving of a name, so you're not being located. If you have the option to turn it off, then you ruin the whole point of having the command in the first place, which is to find areas with the highest concentration of people, to be able to RP with. No names, descriptions or anything, no places like shilmista (Oh, there's 1 in shilmista, must be an orc, kill it!) or dungeon/quest areas, just cities and towns. That seems the fair middle ground.
