As an off the wall idea, has any one considered that trades could require feat points to learn ?. This would mean making a choice between being a master of trades (which would still be an interesting RP) and using your feat points to gain the trades or using them in the normal way.
This might address some of the points above about choice and balance and use an exisiting mechanic to govern the whole thing.

I believe he means something like spending 1 feat point to become inept in the trade of whichever trade person you're around. Then of course you could skill up as normal.

Although personally I like the idea of using stat points to learn trades, I think that it would be better if we used the system suggested by Dalvyn, one trade at GM, two at expert and so on.
Personally I would like to see new feats coming it that affected trades that could make you either learn a trade faster, failing less or giving you a boost in it, or *cough* making you able to create minor magical weapons.
