Thieves and evasion

I just just wondering a bit about the mechanics of how thieves evade spells. Are they able to evade ranged spells 100% of the time with the right feats? I ask because I had a duel with a thief type character and I must have cast at least 10 lightning bolts at him and not one touched him. I understand that thieves have some evasion type abilities that keep them alive and I certainly don't mean to say that something is broke, but it struck me as a bit weird that I couldn't touch him at all with a ranged attack spell, except with old bread n butter. (magic missile)

Seek ye defeat? Ye shall most certainly find it.
Seek ye nothing? Then all ye can find is victory.

In D&D, evasion works like this:
If subjected to an attack that allows a Reflex save for half damage, a character with evasion takes no damage on a successful save.
Lightning bolt has a Reflex save, magic missile not :)

At least, that'd be my theory.

We are moving toward the d20 ruleset (http://www.d20srd.org/), and have implemented that version of evasion. Basically any thief will have evasion, which means that if they make a successful reflex save against a spell that allows one (such as lightning bolt), they take no damage. With a high dexterity, it can be very hard to hit them at all with such spells.

Advanced thieves may also have improved evasion, which causes them to take only half damage even if they fail their reflex save.

It will become harder for the thief to save against your spell as your mastery of the spell and your level go up.

Sort of trying to affect a priest (high will saves) with their respective high wisdom (sums to their high will saves).

Yea like magic missile if oyu get it off past a concentration check it hits automatically unless you got a magical barrier to block them completely. It's oneo f those spells that just hits. They cast you hurt! <.<

Ok then, I get it. I kind of like evasion:) Makes me want to make a thief.
